The OECD praised the government. Opposition was fierce. He was, he recalls, "not really embarrassed" by the volume of it. He is fond of a phrase that recurs throughout our conversation: "I was right when others were wrong."

"At that time, many European leaders didn't want to be seen with Zelensky, because they wanted to show a certain restraint in terms of the relationship with Russia. I made another choice. And again, I was right when some others were wrong."

On Mario Draghi’s landmark report on EU competitiveness – a hefty document calling for radical economic reform – he notes that when he was pushing similar ideas in his final European Council conclusions, "some ambassadors criticised me. Today, almost two years later, who was right and who was wrong?"

Those critics, he adds pointedly, tended to operate off the record. "When they were criticising me, they never dared to go public. Most of them." He allows himself a slight pause. "But they are those who today are forced to recognise, on the substance: I was right."

France’s CB seeks to lead European fightback against Visa and Mastercard Payments scheme pushes for ‘co-badging’ that allows French bank cards to run on both international and local networks

Sur la souveraineté des paiements en Europe : "French online bank Qonto, BNP Paribas-owned fintech Nickel, and BoursoBank, Société Générale’s rapidly growing online bank, are among those that use just Visa and Mastercard".

What is extraordinary in Sanchez's speech is that he does not attack Trump, Putin whoever (actually, he never mentions them by name) the way liberals do by invoking a world of the 1990s that never really existed.
In fact, he says nothing about the "end of history" world.

easy-and-wrong-but-not-terribly-harmful beats easy-and-wrong-and-very-harmful every time, and being a good policy economist with 15+years of experience is about knowing the difference.

Lebanon is such a grim example of Israeli hubris and its folly. Israel had countless opportunities to negotiate a stable peace with the Lebanese govt, but time and time again chose invasion and/or mucking about in Lebanese civil wars via exploitable proxies. Why? Two reasons...
