Not to disagree with your point, I’m all for it! It’s one barrier among many, thus the need for actual ideological opposition rather than just procedural. Getting rid of the electoral college isn’t a cure-all.
Three things:
1. Attempts are already being made by several States to do so, need more support on that front.
2. It exists as a structure of control. As long as it continues to exist, it functions to prevent said “overwhelm”.
3. Trump still won with the popular vote.
Do have judgement for those in power who have a lot more access to legislation and power than just a single vote for a person once every 2-4 years.
