Schematic of potential complexes that form between TAM receptors and apoptosis cells or viruses at the cell surface
Our lab is excited to hire a postdoctoral researcher to study the mechanisms that viruses use to ‘hijack’ TAM receptors in viral spread. We are looking for someone who is excited to learn new techniques and work in a highly collaborative team! Please share!

If our tacit requirement in science for English mastery went away, would that be bad? scientistseessquirrel.wordpress.com/2025/02/25/i...
The Starbird lab is phenomenal and doing amazing research. You will be hard-pressed to find a better mentor!

Another great job at my favorite university: UNC-Chapel, as new Director of the UNC Macromolecular Interactions Facility. Our outstanding Director is retiring. The Director is responsible for 1) core facility management, 2) training, & 3) graduate teaching 1/n

I wonder what a thoughtful discussion about the definition of “merit” would produce. There’s a reason we have hiring and admissions committees instead of just spreadsheets.
PhD students/applicants, postdocs, PIs: brainstorming sessions are happening all over about various ways to support you. When specific research funding facts are known and things are clearer, the plans can crystallize. It’s hard to trust when it’s not public yet, but talk to your leaders!
Ok scientists & those who love science 🧪: here is another exhortation. Call Congress TODAY about the freeze on NIH Council Meetings and Study Sections. Emphasize that this means NO new grants are being funded & labs will soon start to shut down and fire employees. Phone numbers are at:

I get your point, but they did open the game up to anyone who could safely get there, ticket or not. I’m imagining all the dorm residents 1 block away without tix who suddenly got to go. (I lived in Hinton James dorm close to the Smith center in the prior century.)
Aside from general citizenship (call our reps), what can fellow scientists and concerned lay people do to help?
I doomscroll … I feel feelings… then I’m trying to figure out the best ways for me to make a positive difference and protect what’s most important (people of course).
I am just now learning this is a thing, and I had to read the comments to find out what “fluff” is !😅. Only experience with the stuff was Mom’s easy fudge recipe. (Grew up many places, mostly the southeast, and parents are Oregonians.)

Holden Thorp writes that the public response from college presidents to the Trump administration’s orders has been quiet so far—but he expects that to change. #HigherEd #EDUSky #AcademicSky bit.ly/40ZKRV9
Got a veterinary oncology tour today. This is the stereotactic irradiator that is shrinking kitty’s lymphoma. Improving already.
I just don't think I should spend a lot of precious energy on the spectacles that are just for show or meant to distract.
What someone says they will do and what they actually (can) do may not be the same. Trying not to react to the *talk* until the *action* is clear. Nothing so far prevents me from respecting the dignity of another person, giving to those in need, and working to increase both opportunity and justice.
Academics get so jaded about institutions, when they reach a #leadership position many feel #researchculture is unactionable. Me and @deefitzgerald.bsky.social wrote a guide in @immunolcellbiol.bsky.social on leadership nurturing a positive culture 1/13

Two sparrows at an airport gate.
At the gate waiting to journey to visit family in New Orleans. Pleasantly surprised how quiet the RDU airport is this morning. (We could have slept a little longer, but who knew.) I can even hear the airport birds in the rafters! Here is a pair of sparrows looking for crumbs.
Panel starts at 9:30 am on December 14th in Room 25B
New or incoming faculty? Please come join us for a panel tomorrow at #CellBio2024
It’s in the same room as the Mentoring Keynote, which is sure to be amazing. Come to hear about best mentoring practices and stay for the panel!
Anyone have ideas how to deal with those employing the "strategic incompetence" approach? Just give them the least important work? I think there are some who have the same approach to teaching (where research is the main metric of success).
