Five years ago, we had the first confirmed autoctone case of covid-19 in Italy.

On Fosforo e miele, I put down some memories, thoughts and facts about that time, the origin of the virus, the management of the emergency in Italy and somewhere else.

Since December 19th, Italian journalist #CeciliaSala is detained by the Iranian regime with no clear accusation. Set her free, now!

Stigma for any doubt about totally new vaccines, politicization of any preventative measure, polarization of the society about the last pandemic is the best way to encourage next. I wouldn't. 8)

They weren't. They risked their own more than others' lives. Many died, others suffer long covid. They weren't either smarter nor luckier to miss shots. They're lucky if alive. Cancelling their fines is less expensive than claiming 100 euros each. It's not "unfair", it's sensible at this time 7)

But shifting from "vaccination as a right" to "vaccination as a duty" is not a smart choice in risk communication. Even worse is what is heard today, as cancelling fines was a sort of reward for those who refused vaccination and didn't pay at the time, because they were smarter 6)

I'm reknown in Italy as a passionate advocate for vaccinations and as an author of divulgative books on them. I strongly believe covid vaccines were an extraordinary achievement and the only way to overcome the emergency phase of the pandemic in a safe and effective way 5)

Any debate about any vaccines (not only covid) in Italy now sees the objections of people forced to get a shot, who correlate any illness to it, and has developed a strong resentment against authorities and those ruling at that time 4)

That's why I don't think that was a great idea, especially for the harsh, stigmatizing and blaming communication accompanying the law. It risked to cause more harm than good, and I'm afraid it was so 3)

I guess only Austria, among free Western countries, introduced such a strict rule, but waived it after few weeks, when evidence confirmed that vaccines didn't stop omicron transmission. Moreover, in Italy, at that time, we already had one of the highest vaccination rate in the world. 2)

Unpopular opinion. Italian government forgives fines to people who refused to vaccinate against covid in 2022. In the beginning, immunization was compulsory for healthcare professionals, teachers, and other workers of public interest, then the mandate was extended to all citizens over 50s. 1)

Last Sunday, Fiorentina soccer player Edoardo Bove had a sudden cardiac arrest on the pitch. Immediately, X was flooded with conspiracy theories blaming anticovid vaccines. He recovered, investigation is still under way, but the record of a 2020 post covid myocarditis tells another possible story

AVIARIA H5N1: siamo pronti? E a vaccini?
