Very true, but the UAE and other Gulf countries have set up huge awards for translated books. “Ghettoized” translations are entering more public forums than ever before

So true. I have another gripe about why Gulf broadcasters rarely mention Iraqi pain in this war. I think it’s because they (or their patrons) continue to view Iraq as a pariah state, post-Kuwait, despite the country’s superficial restoration among Arab states.

Up till yesterday, Al Jazeera barely mentioned the events in Iraq, only fixating on strikes on the American Embassy or American bases. But there is a serious escalation in Baghdad between the Iraqi militias and their targets, including Jordan. It’s almost as if Iraq is peripheral to the issue.

Does being European mean that they were less Muslim as a result?

And tea transformed early twentieth century Iraq. Previously coffee drinkers, Iraqis nowadays opt for tea over coffee, although they also drink coffee but in smaller amounts. The British Empire’s Indian troops were the catalysts for the introduction of tea in Iraq and the commodity became a fixture.

Among all the tributes to Rob Reiner and the many accolades for his films, nobody has mentioned his political investigation of the 2003 war, Shock and Awe. A very courageous film
