Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.

What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.

Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

There's so many parallel sessions at #JSM2025 that it's hard to choose where to go, so I web-scraped the schedule and made a chatbot to help.

I've made it public, so hopefully it can help you too - try it out 👉 shiny.mitchelloharawild.com/jsm2025/

I'm excited to share our latest work, now out in #PLOSGenetics! If you feel limited by linear models in TWAS or PWAS but don't think you can switch to nonlinear methods due to a lack of individual-level phenotype data, this paper is for you.

Within-trial data borrowing for sequential multiple assignment randomized trials Summary. The Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial (SMART) is a complex trial design that involves randomizing a single participant multiple time

Excited to share new research from my former student Ales Kotalik, along with David Vock, Brian Hobbs, and Nancy Sherwood. Here we discuss how dynamic borrowing methods developed for precision oncology can also be used to improve efficiency in a SMART.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

For estimating low-rank signal in a matrix:
-Nuclear norm (NN) penalization over-shrinks when the signal-to-noise ratio is high 🙁,
-Hard thresholding (HT) the singular values over-fits when the signal-to-noise ratio is low 😲,
-But an empirical variational Bayes (EVB) approach is just right 😎.
