I always thought precomps just use the parent comp’s frame rate, so unless that comp was built by dragging the iPhone clip onto the new comp icon, I wouldn’t think that would happen. Then again, AE throws weird, inscrutable errors all the time so anything is possible!
Well in that case, I think you were correct that the computer is dumb and was trying to ruin your day.
Any chance any of the clips were shot on an iPhone? iPhone uses a standard base framerate but actually records a variable framerate that Adobe software usually detects.
