Kalecki remaining the most vindicated theorist of the modern era.

The provincial bourgeois is rather like a hippopotamus, in that his placid nature and slightly ridiculous physical form tends to blind you to the fact that this is a very well adapted and extremely dangerous animal, who only seems harmless because he usually gets whatever he wants.

If you want to keep the SQUARS-ness, maybe try animating the explosion out from the centre for the larger ones?
A scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey, showing a black monolith rising from the ground, with wary apes looking on.

Is it the underlying DOS that causes the mouse pointer to redraw itself every cycle, or is that the game?
And Bluesky will never have critical mass because nothing has critical mass. It’s a period of fragmentation. Culture, media, politics, nothing has mass scale anymore. Free yourselves and stop yearning for it.

Michal Kalecki vindication continues apace.

Did you ever play "Fate of the World"? It's a little dated now, but I liked the message that we can fix multiple final crises (climate change, peak oil, poverty etc.). With considered, consistent action. (It also puts you in the role of global crisis czar with no democratic obligations however).

I was surprised when I found out Americans could get 30 year mortgages. You can only get 5 years fixed max in Australia, and the rates and lack of benefits like offsets makes them unattractive vs a variable rate mortgage.
Watching Basil barely win Churchlands was particularly satisfying.

the next generation of democratic leadership needs to combine a steely-eyed puritanism with righteous hatred. new model army dems.
NASA funded a wave of wind turbine test centers and demos in the 70s & 80s. The program made major strides towards modernizing the tech (more on that later).
But can we take a second to admire the retro-future / vaporwave-ish vibes of this two-bladed wonder installed on the beach in Hawaii?

We, too, do not have the luxury of ignorance. Our systems serve us well for the most part. But they will need to be revamped for and by the next generation — the generation of the young people at the rehearsal dinner — to accommodate our rising population, technological progress, increasing affluence, and climate change. The great European cathedrals were built over generations by thousands of people and sustained entire communities. Similarly, the electric grid, the public-water supply, the food-distribution network, and the public-health system took the collective labor of thousands of people over many decades. They are the cathedrals of our secular era. They are high among the great accomplishments of our civilization. But they don’t inspire bestselling novels or blockbuster films. No poets celebrate the sewage treatment plants that prevent them from dying of dysentery. Like almost everyone else, they rarely note the existence of the systems around them, let alone understand how they work.

Love this @charlescmann.bsky.social ode to the power grid, the public water system, the food supply chain, and the public health system:

Picking the gap between Karratha and Port Hedland, which is probably the best one can hope for, for a cyclone that's going to make landfall in the Pilbara.
The map displays the Baltic Sea region with a dark blue background representing the sea and lighter blue areas showing landmasses of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The title "PLUGGED INTO EUROPE" is prominently featured in white text at the centre with country flags above. Thin blue lines illustrate energy infrastructure, while icons in yellow and red denote specific locations. Administrative boundaries are outlined in subtle contrast, with a European Commission logo in the bottom right corner.
Plugged into Europe! 🔌
The Baltics 🇪🇪 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 have disconnected from the Russian power grid and fully synchronised with the 🇪🇺 continental one, marking their energy independence.
After two decades of preparation, it is now time to benefit from our common energy system.

No spark left between Estonia and Russia. Estonian photographer Sergei Stepanov captured the moment of the last one during the final disconnection of our electric grid from Russia.
Trump is going to take us to the fucking cleaners on AUKUS.
Refreshing to see a company say "you know what, we grossly underestimated how long this project will take, we're delaying it a year." Instead of rushing whatever bug-filled mess they can get to compile on release day.
I'm just waiting for Trump to realise he's got Australia over the barrel with this boondoggle. He's going to make us give him Queensland as part of the deal or something. I think we might be able to negotiate him down to South Australia.
Really interesting video on the Callide incident. Great reminder of what can happen when protections fail.
