Narrow synthetic phonics is not effective for teaching struggling young readers Synthetic phonics, where children are taught to pronounce sounds in isolation before putting them together to form words, isn’t working for many struggling young readers, a study led by UCL has found.

21% of teachers persist with synthetic phonics, even when it doesn't work for their pupils, finds Prof Dominic Wyse @hhcp-ucl.bsky.social @ioe.bsky.social.

More flexible approaches based on motivation for reading and writing are needed to help improve England’s reading standards.
