William Morris - Useful Work versus Useless Toil

'it has become an article of the creed of modern morality that all labour is good in itself - a convenient belief to those who live on the labour of others. But as to those on whom they live, I recommend them not to take it on trust' - William Morris

This!

"One thing that organizers know is that...We organize people to strategize around the specific regional, national, and contextual issues they are facing.

We don’t try to “save people.”

Instead, we try to teach them how to save themselves."

Free time has become the right’s latest site of attacks against disabled people and people with low incomes. These attacks are built on made-up stories that over-estimate the ‘free’ time people actually have & portray these groups as being unworthy of joy and reinvigoration.

In ‘The tragedy of leisure’, the author laments for The Times what he perceives as an increase in people’s time for leisure, attributes people’s increased interest in ‘populism’ to this extra time, has a go at people for not having more children & more.

In today’s episode of Centering All of Life Around Profit Hurts Disabled People. I can’t go to my local Barnes and Noble because there is nowhere to sit down in the bookstore. Imagine being able to sit down and browse through a stack of books in a bookstore. Thorn wanted to go and now I feel bad 😞

Absolutely vile stuff
‘Those on welfare are not enduring the cost-of-living crisis in the same way as the rest of us, with successive governments fiddling with prices and prioritising claimants’

Everyone should have access to leisurely and restful activities

Talking about work – Class Work Project

‘When I look at how everything works at an agency, it becomes clear that it is a mini-system of quite real oppression designed or evolved in practice to control the immigrant workforce better’

Britain has stopped believing in freedom of protest Recent police raids show the authorities are clamping down not just on protest, but the very idea of it

'Today, the UK is rated “obstructed” for civic freedoms by the Civicus Monitor, placing it among a small group of European democracies where protest and civil liberties are seen as under pressure'

‘A cruel penalty’: disabled people face lower benefit payments if conditions not deemed lifelong Forthcoming rules mean debilitating conditions may not meet strict ‘severe and lifelong’ criteria, say charities

'“Awarding people a lower rate just because they may hypothetically recover later turns the constant struggle with unpredictable conditions into an additional cruel penalty”'

‘They went for wealth, not health. They chose to tolerate inequality. They opted for more of the same as we’ve had since 2010. That choice says much about Westminster’s priorities. People in power don’t look at life expectancy because [...] we’ve all got used to expecting less from our lives’👇🏼

"Just try and keep going, you know? And have a sense of humour, realise that there's some things that are out of your control. Trying to be aware of that and moving through the world at our own pace is what we all have to do. Try not to be too self-critical and be aware of internalising ableism. And just... good luck!'.

'Don't take work too seriously. Do the work you have to do and hopefully enjoy it (and join a union if possible), but it's not your entire life, so find leisure activities that give you pleasure. And best of luck whatever happens'.
