My first oil painting. It's less about accuracy, more experimentation. I really like the flow and saturated pigments, though it takes longer to work layers. I have a few brands I've been trying, and also some media for texture, adjusting drying speed, walnut oil, & medium W to make watersoluble.
weekend watercolor sketches

2)dozing dog
3) ref from @drawdailytogether and @laurahartart - Fountain cat, Kyoto Japan

Posting has not been a priority, but here are some #fountainpeninksketches from the last couple of weeks. Watercolor sketches in next post.

It's hard enough without the injuries and this basho was especially hard to watch so many excellent rikishi continue despite serious injuries.
(OK, end rant)
These are young hardworking men that play the roles of entertainer, cultural ambassador, & athlete.
I think maybe a bit more respect is due regardless of their placement in the banzuke.
TBH western fans seem to be inordinately harsh. while they downplay the successes of some, they are also fairly damning of the wrestlers who had fewer wins. They spend most of their waking hours training or fulfilling PR responsibilities.
(I think this never posted last week. Trying again)
Kotoshoho is the GenX of Sumo. How is it that he does well & cameras/commentators either ignore him outright or keep referring to his win last July as a "fluke"?13 wins is not a fluke. He got yet another fighting spirit prize this Harubasho.

i love this cat, particularly because he is so neurodivergent. He has difficulty with the simplest tasks like walking straight, running into ways because he forgets to look before jumping, or balancing. he's also the smartest cat I've adopted.

Sketches following tutorials (Patreon, the Jack Reid Watercolor Basics book, glamping "research").
My favorite reproduction (even with mistakes) was of @lachmair.art's boat tutorial. It's challenging, and mine lacks depth in comparison, but I'm learning a lot.

Kirishima's ozeki meeting is confirmed. He's finally recovered from the yeet heard around the world in January 2024 and now has the opportunity to join every other Mongolian ozeki in going on to yokozuna. It'll be tough but this is shaping up to be a crazy competitive year of sumo
#sumospoilers
Done with gouache and watercolor powder.

I think this is more mixed media than watercolor paper--doesn't take much water before pilling.

It can be hard to stay positive these days. But, I am making sure to experience & photo-document the beauty of nature. In the grand scheme of things, life is short so it's important to treasure each moment with those that matter. #claremontwildernesstrail #naturephotos
"How was your spring break?"
Trapped in Chicago for 6 hours, stunned by the debauchery and insensitivity of Vegas predation on the addicted and poor; healed by Death Valley; crushed by impending loss but trying to move forward with hope.
I planned to see the lunar eclipse this morning. I took some test photos last night, but I discovered that:
1)the moon was behind my neighbor's house so I'd have to brave the cold & walk to an unobstructed area,BUT
32) freezing rain made the ground like an ice rink. also obviously overcast ๐๐ญ
I'm making a playlist of what I think would fit the College show "Generation Death" on KSPC (Claremont) w/ host Wednesday from 10-midnight on Thursdays. After completing undergrad homework, I'd listen & work on painting homework (art req.) Found a 1998 newsletter thanks to @archive.org
Ink and/or watercolor sketches from the last two weeks. It's been a busy, art slump-y period of time.
I was hoping to make it to the CA pen show, but family priorities >> frivolous money spending. I did some "sightseeing" on the ride back to LAX.
Some #inkandwatercolor sketches from the week. I had some difficulty uploading this earlier and then didn't have time until now to try again.

more weekend sketches, mostly inks and various watersoluble media. of course there was one sumo rikishi sketch from all the Setsubun ceremonies.
Weekend sketches. much of what I did was swatching and tutorials, but I did get distracted studying the wind turbine. The nacelle includes electronics and gearbox. 1 of the reference on wikimedia commons had a worker standing inside of it that showed the scale.
Art is escaping me right now, so I've focused on some food: I finally got the vegan soup dumplings to work. I had mix in the agarized soup into the rest of the filling and make dumpling skins from scratch.
Also today is Setsubun so Ehomaki and roasted soybeans (w and w/o matcha sugar coating see)
vegan soup dumplings
Bluesky only allows 4 photos per post. Leftover vegan soup dumplings with store bought wrappers and homemade vegan duck, mushroom, and veg filling. it's a mashup of recipes, but the TL:DR-- jackfruit in "duck" doesn't improve the texture markedly & is too messy for cleanup.

Some sketches and weekend food photos. I didn't take photos of the final products, but there was a lot of meal prep and cooking. I made vegan kimchi following the Serious Eate recipe, but 1/4 disappeared into stomachs before I could hide them. Also attempted vegan duck & soup dumplings.
