Guess it was naive to hope that Disney would keep selling the OG versions of Dark Forces and Outlaws after the remasters were released. 🙄 Star Wars: Rebellion is now no longer available well.
Updated my "Where to buy these games" page, which is looking sadder and sadder. dreamm.aarongiles.com/buy/
Warsaw is both medieval hunting lodge and Cyberpunk 2077
The “Calvin’s dad explains two types” meme, inspired by a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. Clockwise from top left: 1) Calvin’s dad walks into frame to find Calvin trying to operate a record player. The dad says: “There are only two industries left in America: gambling, and fraud.” 2) The dad shows where the record goes, and how to turn on the player, while Calvin watches. Dad says “Derivatives? Gambling. AI? Fraud. Video games? Gambling. Social media? Fraud.” Calvin says “yeah”. 3) With one hand open palm up, Calvin’s dad cheerfully explains to Calvin out of frame below him, “The stock market looks like gambling, but it’s actually fraud.” 4) In bed in a dark room, Calvin clutches at his pillow, eyes wide in existential terror. There is no text in the panel.
This was awesome. It hadn't occurred to me that a video signal of scrolling text would be physically legible on a CAV disc medium like laserdisc or CED, but it makes total sense. (Skip to the halfway point if you don't care about unboxing the microscope.)

do you want "Catholicism but american" we invented that, it's called Episcopalianism and it's even more woke. all the priests are lesbians. good luck
Yeah, I think it's way too easy to blast applications to many schools these days. In our day you sweated over bespoke applications, which created friction so you chose carefully. I did early admission to Harvard and UChicago, got into both (picked UChicago obv), so I dodged having to apply to more.
The oldest MIDI file I have personally collected - a rendition of Sting's "Englishman in New York", dated September 25th 1993. 🔊🎵
A WHOLE CIVILIZATION WILL DIE TONIGHT My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools. Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's "keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's "we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight." It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before. "It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time. A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead. @michaelfdubois Mukad A QuBoy @michacifdubois
Brutal.
Gen X collectively reliving Challenger, Columbia and Cold War nuclear holocaust anxiety all in the same week is a fucking lot, y'all.
📅 29 years ago today, Outlaws was released!
💾 Outlaws was released on April 7th, 1997! 💾
That's right! We destroyed the oldschool demo compo with my most advanced 6502 code to date. This is really running in a stock Atari 2600 with no expansions! (except 32k ROM bank switching)

1/2 *cup* of ground cumin??? I think not! (Pretty sure that should be 1/2 tsp like the ones below.)
First thought: There's no way this is going to be good.
Second thought: OK, but it will fall apart once they get to the chorus.
Final thought: Holy shit, the chorus works even better.

What is the greatest sequel of all time? There are many opinions. Personally, I found mine in 2009:
"The current work-in-progress version of my LucasArts emulator DREAMM emulates over 20 Star Wars games. While getting them all working, I couldn't help but notice huge inconsistencies in how the opening crawl was handled from game to game." @aarongiles.com

CSS is DOOMed!
I've build DOOM in CSS and every wall, floor, barrel, and imp is a div, positioned in 3D space using CSS transforms.

Try it out! But... not every browser can handle it. This is taking the browser to its limit. Chrome has some issues. Safari too. Bugs will be filed.
I joined Harmonia this year to sing Messiah again in December, but this was my 2nd most anticipated program. At least I'd sung Messiah before! This was 28 new choruses to learn in 6 weeks, definitely a challenge but feeling pretty good for tomorrow's performance!

Seriously, I had no idea until @aarongiles.com told me! It turns out that you had to be more persistent on the Mac version and USE the computer FIVE TIMES! #MARCHintosh #LucasArts

Today's 27-year-old nostalgia blast:

After being reminded of this a few years ago, went down the Bomfunk MC's rabbit hole and found 3 pretty solid albums (accounting for the occasional '90s hip-hop cringe).
You can override the 30fps limiter but choosing the "Advanced" configuration option and changing the maximum refresh rate back to 60. It defaults to on because I heard some levels are not complete-able at 60fps.
Front end screenshot of Dreamm containing several LucasArts titles in a half carousel format. Several Star Wars games, Monkey Island 1 and Sam & Max Hit the Road are among the titles shown.
Been obsessing way too much over the Dreamm project. This may as well be the "LucasArts Classic Mini" where you supply the games and it handles the configuration. Covers Scumm, DOS and Windows titles with a host of QoL fixes, joystick and network support in an easy to use environment.
Ah, NERO__BURNING_ROM ... the dead giveaway you're looking at a rip and not an original CD image. Also the 2022 dates.
Every once in a while Raymond Chen does an architectural comparison series and I get to see (a paraphrased version of) some code I wrote way back when. He's right about why we passed stack size/16, but surprised he didn't call out the unconventional x15 usage.

Always hate it when I'm searching up an algorithm and can only seem to find academic CS papers and articles written in (La)TeX rather than any actual implementations. I'll take working sample code over equations any day, even if I'm going to ultimately write my own implementation.
Follow-up to my QuickTime SDK question: The best place to search was discmaster.textfiles.com The key was knowing the names of some of the files that would only be in the SDK, like qtim32.lib. From there I was able to find many betas plus 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 3.0, 4.0, 4.1.2, and 5.0 at least. 👍
LOL, I've had them before and it wasn't a big deal. But I had to drive it to the dealership today and it was most definitely a big deal. Car's engine couldn't rev enough to get on the highway, so I had to take surface streets, and even then it struggled up every slight incline.
Yeah, I'm replacing a Hyundai Sonata, which was a pretty decent car until now. I've heard good chatter about the Ioniq 5 in general, though I've also heard it's had issues with the ICCU needing to be replaced frequently. Drove a Ford Mach-E on vacation and it seemed pretty nice.
Meh, car's check engine light came on, dealer says it needs a full engine replacement. Been thinking of a used EV for a while, now seems like the moment. It's a 2nd car mostly used for commuting around the area, low mileage stuff. My 6'2" son needs to fit as a passenger. Hit me with recommendations!
