I really enjoy games that offer a mix of open and blind bidding. The Dune Imperium combat system is a good example. Blood Rage does a good job of mascarading as area control but is essentially similar.

I can only speak for myself. I really like a lot of his games which I often find original and elegant. I also have a lot of respect for his design journey and distribution model. He used to work with larger companies, he now releases all his games in print and play which makes them very accessible.
