Good morning! Yours truly at Yelcho Lake on a drizzly drive from Futaleufú to Chaiten yesterday. The sun will not shine every day of your life. It’s not supposed to. That being said, you still need to stop, breathe, and enjoy the view. Thank you for listening to my Tedtalk.

Good morning from Chilean Patagonia where our 2 1/2 year old Icelandic stallion Ori has found a new friend.
In the mythology of the region Ori is the original man
I love those winter coats!
Oh yeah.

Good morning! This is one of the best fly-fishing spots on the Futaleufú. Not that I ever catch anything. The trout know my heart isn’t in it.

Another reason to love autumn in Futaleufú, in addition to the colorful lenga beech trees, is the teaser snow left by each rainfall. Last winter was a historically bad year for snow. Most Patagonian ski resorts did not even open. This year El Niño is expected to dump a ton of snow! I can’t wait!

Good morning from Ronika & Pookie! Pookie was born in late spring, Ronika in summer. Their Dad is the stunningly handsome Little Willie, so I predict a bright future for both as breathtaking Patagonian alpacas. This is their first autumn in Futaleufú!
😀😀😀

Good morning! Today’s timeline cleanse? I wanted to take some photos of our Icelandic stallions, Ori & Baldur, with the autumn color on Tres Monjas but Baldur was much more interested in a play date with the ladies.

Good morning bluesky friends. Here is the view from our bedroom at 7:40 am in the Azul Valley, Futaleufú, Chile. Yesterday’s rain left a sprinkling of snow on the mountains as the lenga beech trees are just entering autumn splendor.
Enormously blessed. But I have also made choices that confused many—leaving the US 33 years ago for a country friends & family had barely heard of; leaving my academic career in Valpo to create an NGO; and, finally, purchasing an abandoned farm off the grid. Over & over people have asked “why?”
Most flights to Esquel leave the downtown domestic Aeroparque (AEP) and most incoming flights from Europe land at Ezeiza (EZE) But there ARE 1 or 2 flights from EZE to EQS x week. If you can find them you can avoid the airport change. But staying a night in BA is always a great idea too!
Yes, the quickest way to Futa from the US is fly to Buenos Aires & connect to Esquel—though some days you have to change airports in BA. The Chile route is Santiago to Puerto Montt to Chaiten. Best to spend a night in beautiful Puerto Varas here. If you’re not in a hurry the car ferries are fun too!

I decided not to tell the trout in this river that “a whole civilization will die tonight.” He probably wasn’t referring to them. And, if he was, he was probably bluffing. Trying to get a better deal. The kingfisher on the bridge knows the world is hard enough as it is. All reflections & shadows.

Upon graduation from the Creative Writing Program at U of MN in ‘92, I prepared my move to Chile. Mentor & friend—Michael Dennis Browne—gifted me his latest book dedicated, “For Todd—grateful for what you have given, confident in what you can do.” RIP dear friend. Funeral will be May 15th in MSP.

Autumn colors at Lago Bagillt, Chubut. No one denies that Pinilla Lake is the star attraction for autumn color in Futaleufú, but many cannot make the 3-hour climb. Option #2 is bit of a secret: Bagillt Lake on the Argentinian side of Cerro Cónico. There is a road to this lake. You will need 4 x 4.

It takes 4 flights & 2 days to get from Milwaukee to Futaleufú. I’m tired. Impatient Icelandic fire horse thinks I’ve had enough coffee. It’s time to come out and play.
The fact that Chile & Argentina share the Futaleufú watershed, giving rise to historic border disputes—combined with the connectivity challenges Chile faced prior to the Carretera Austral—made the creation of a new town an urgent priority. Happy birthday to Futaleufú, Chile! 97 years old today!
