“By shifting the vast majority of university funding into the hands of the aggregate decisions of 17-year-olds, the English system of choice has become an enormous machine for finding out who has the best (or best resourced) marketing department.”

Reading a book published in 2025 by a Nobel prize-winning economist, and the start is ... not promising. None of this is true, and the scholarship cited here is conspicuously out of date (Mitterauer first published in 2003).
Fucking omgekeerde wereld.
We are sad to note the passing of Averil Cameron, historian of late antiquity and Byzantium www.medievalists.net/2026/04/aver... #history
I read the first review of my edition of the ‘Collection CCCC capitulorum’ with special pleasure and gratitude. Great start of the day!
Some good news - a new issue of Early Medieval Europe has dropped! And it's a bumper issue, with six articles, not the usual five. Here's a quick thread on the delights awaiting you: 1/9

Sweden goes back to basics, swapping screens for books in the classroom in attempt to reverse declines in reading, math, and science.

This is a purely British tradition: to interpret EU regulations most ridiculously and then claim it represents the end of British civilisation. Ironically, this tradition survived Brexit, which was actually caused by exactly this tiresome tradition.
The binding study advice—or BSA—does not work, according to the largest study ever conducted on the subject. Graduation is barely faster, and fewer students obtain a degree. As far as student union LSVb is concerned, the BSA can be scrapped immediately.

To be left dead by attacks is the natural state of the Middle Easterner, while in the Western culture (also Israel somehow) being killed is a major taboo.
