So I’m off Twitter now for safety but like other decisions I’ve had to make over the last year (read chapter 10 of my book Unbroken for deats) its meant some of our voices are suffocated again. I tried threads but it’s weird… & kind of hoping this or Spill can be the hope …but not too hopeful lol

Bring in Musk. It went from being called into the office (I was also told I could not block racists for years) once a week to deal with colleagues complaints and maybe 10 hate mails a day to hundreds a day & it became a lot more blunt (“Indians are savages” or “go become an mmiwg”for example)

It also provided a space to uphold Indigenous voices. But that was also met with scrutiny. When I did a thread about amazing Indigenous people, someone made a complaint to the national ethics board. So while Twitter was an incredibly empowering space, for many, it was also violent before musk.

…them, I asked Twitter what white people (by the way Im mostly white by blood) what to call them, thousands replied that white was the right term (and those who attempted to disapline me for using the words apologized).

Twitter was also a way to have conversations and a critical analysis about racism and show those (mostly white) journalists and leaders that our (often very marginalized and very few) voices in the newsroom mattered. For example, when I was told by leaders not to use the word white to describe ….

So on top of the, in many ways extreme, white supremacist hate we’d receive on Twitter, we also experienced trolling by our own. But I stayed because Twitter was also a way for us to demonstrate that the public had a huge appetite for our stories and our non-white lens.

For years journalist (mostly men & 99.9% white)used HR as a weapon to overscrutinize me & other outspoken BIPOC journalists. It started to lesson when we started to talk to each other & speak out. Most if not all the complaints were in the realm of us not being objective by way of just being BIPOC.

Interested to see the content that garnered the most hate on Twitter? At the end I was getting up to 40 hate tweets a day. (Some death threats). This photo accumulated about 600 hate tweets.

Bluesky jankiness is like a newborn elephant trying to walk for the first time. Twitter jankiness is like an adult elephant stumbling in its death throes after being shot 42 times.

Having 15,000 followers on Tw*tter but 20 (?) on here makes me feel like a cab driver who was a doctor in their home country that got politically destabilized by the CIA.
