An elevated view of Edmonton that tired out the photographer as he ran up a steep incline. Taken through bare trees. A city skyline is seen off in the distance on banks of a partially ice covered river. The sky is mostly blue with white wispy clouds at the top of the picture

I woke up to quacking this morning. For the past few springs, a number of ducks have stopped off in my yard for a bit on their migration home

Oh, for the love of sex! The climax of Bill S-209
Oh, for the love of sex! The climax of Bill S-209 YouTube video by Senator Paula Simons

Why yes. I did give a speech in the Senate about the joy of sex. A speech about sex and libraries, and the dangers of trying to censor what our teens can read and watch and do online. In a world full of digital risk, we need to teach our kids media literacy, and sexual literacy too. #cdnpoli #ableg

New preprint showing Adgrg6 and Sox9 genetically interact, increasing the penetrance and severity of scoliosis in mice and that Adgrg6-Sox9 signaling works through a self-reinforcing feedforward circuit to maintain ECM expression in connective tissues of the spine. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

My main gripe with the alphafold example is how it shows you need decades and decades of high quality data, well structured, open and accessible to train a model -- and yet they always gloss over it and pretend it's just AI and magic. No, we need to continuously invest in real data and FAIR data.

Keep an eye out for these amazing scientists at #ORS2026 this week:

New Perspective form Rory Maizels & me: "Gene regulatory networks: from correlative models to causal explanations"

Gene regulatory networks are supposed to give us mechanistic explanations of development, so why are we drowning in 'hairballs' of statistical correlations?

Although I hold some nostalgia for these books, I can't read them because the text is too small!

It sets a bad example when PIs do this. Designing summaries and schematic figures is a huge learning opportunity for trainees. Both in the skills needed to design them and the knowledge about the subject presented.

Lunar New Year and Ramadan have been observed here for more than 100 years. And that is a legacy worthy of celebration!

My mother was a nine year old refugee when she came to this country. She and her sister spoke no English. There were no ESL classes then. But good teachers in the small town of Barrhead where they lived taught them, and taught them well. They all became voracious readers with beautiful diction.

Jacques Monod was part of the French resistance, so I believe scientists (and academics) have a role to play to fight this.
