PCs could barely play DVDs and here is LodgeNet playing out multiple MPEGs simultaneously over several analog cable channels, all on a closed circuit. Is that not fascinating? I sure think it is.
I am a bit irked by how the research/interest in LodgeNet lies solely in the game system part.
Don’t get me wrong, I grew up playing Paper Mario on LodgeNet but there’s a lot more to what is a rather revolutionary (and early) on demand media server packaged up in a user friendly way.
This is INCREDIBLE. Thank you for finding this! I really appreciate it
Jim Cantore replying to a conservative conspiracy theory account on Xitter kinda puts his new NOAA director interview into some interesting context, especially when he brought up Sharpiegate and the director gave a non-answer, blamed “haters”, and didn’t hit back. Rather disappointing.
It is just a proposal but we’ve seen those in charge get away with anything, sad that just one budget proposal can just kill off all the life saving research labs and push us right back to where we were in the 1950s
the most depressing thing I’ve read so far, what do you mean they’re shutting down the NSSL? 😭
It goes even harder when you realize it’s being viewed through the Motorola DCT2000 cable box underneath it. 😎

Fun first day at VCF in Dallas. Lots of people showed up and stopped by. Looking forward to seeing more faces this weekend.
I'll be there all day tomorrow (Saturday), as well as Sunday afternoon. Hope to have someone to keep the TV running while I'm absent Sunday morning!
It really is neat! I’ve been doing a lot of research into them as there is very little known about all/very few footage from all except TWN & Latin America editions.
What’s especially interesting is that some of them even had their own local forecast computers like the HTML app above simulates. 🤠
You’re in luck, as there is a community dedicated to emulating the original software! Here’s a very helpful guide: prevueguide.neocities.org/guides/Esqui...
Forgot one other, there was a spiritual revival of TWC Latin America as TWC en Español in 2022. It was intended to serve the US’ Spanish speaking community that is largely underserved, but also still covered Latin America. This was short lived and died last year.

Yes, there were several international editions of TWC. The Weather Network in Canada still exists to this day. TWC Latin America (1996-2002) also found some success.
There were also a handful of unsuccessful European versions (TWC UK, Germany, Netherlands, Italy: 1996/7-1998).
Thank you so much for this find! This is still way more than we already have + helps filling a lot of the gaps with regards to info about the programming. Still hopeful for footage of the cable version.

I want her
Being a fellow nerd, this is all mostly for an article on the computer that powered these local forecasts, the Weather Star XL made by Silicon Graphics for TWC. Some articles hint at but aren’t clear on whether they were intended to be deployed in the UK and Germany but I will keep looking.
Very interesting, thank you for your reply! I’m actually in the process of researching TWC UK for TWC Archive. I came across forum posts and magazines mentioning some form of local weather (local city ticker on screen on cable) and was hoping to get more clarification. Thanks for your help though!
hi! hate to bump and old post but ive been working on a write up of the weather channel uk, and was hoping to find more info on it. would you possibly be able to share more info you may remember? thanks!!
