Interesting new study using our heart rate discrimination task and hierarchical modelling to investigate generalized anxiety disorder! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

We really need to do something for dinosaur literacy 😭
In “Six Memos for the Next Millenium”, Italo Calvino distilled six literary virtues he felt should endure regardless of how the world changed.
As we enter an age of automated evaluation & production of science, what are the parallel epstemic virtues we should try to preserve? We want your input! 🧵
The index of consumer sentiment isn't broken; models that try to predict it just don't have the right input variables. I fix that and find that, yes, high nominal price levels explain why the vibes are so off. It's the prices, stupid

The victory of the opposition in Hungary yesterday, like the Polish election in 2023, is a victory for democracy, not just in Europe but around the world.
Americans quick to shriek that Magyar is a conservative might want to sit this one out and just let Hungarians celebrate tonight. Promise you Hungarians from the LGBTQ community who voted for Magyar know, and have understood opposition politics against autocracy better than you.
... And if his party was literally named "Mississippi River".
This is, indeed, the perfect analogy
Hungary has chosen Europe.
Europe has always chosen Hungary.
A country reclaims its European path.
The Union grows stronger.
Remember: The recipe for economic growth isn’t tax cuts for the rich. It’s investment in our people — in health care, infrastructure and education — to build a strong middle class.
You don't grow the economy through trickle-down nonsense.
"Each day of the trial, the courtroom filled with community members. Current and former students and colleagues, members of the California Faculty Association from various universities and students who had heard about the case all came to show support..."

“'I’ve never experienced anything like this in my entire life,' the congresswoman said, fighting back tears.
"She described the way people were laying down inside as “like sardines.”
“'It is frightening in there,' she said. 'It is disgusting'..."

This may be lost in the noise--this is as impactful or more than the cuts to NIH and NSF 🧪
Today I am relaunching my newsletter as Neural Flows, inspired by my forthcoming book "Brain Flows"
The newsletter asks: How does the improvised symphony of flows inside our heads generate our minds?
Check out the intro post to the new newsletter here: open.substack.com/pub/neuralfl...

I had to reset my brain after reading 😱
What a tragic and unnecessary loss brought on by cruel policies cruelly enforced.
The broader picture is that while some of the GOP's war on science will be reversible, some won't. Never again in my lifetime will the best and brightest from around the world want to study and work in the US.
Oppression is never isolated to one group, even if it's initially sold that way.
It's often a dry run for the next group.
And there's always a next group.
You ignore things because you erroneously think you are safe.
You're not.
None of us is.
Reece PATRON The Thing 1982 THING Rewatched 1 Feb 2023 it makes me SO ANGRY that audiences and critics of 1982 went to theaters, sat down, were treated to watching THE GREATEST FILM EVER MADE and then were all unanimously like "nope, not good"
I was around back then, but so young I sneaked into The Thing three different times with three different friends. I was blown away and couldn’t get enough. When the bad reviews came out, I wondered if we’d all seen the same movie. It’s now my 2nd favorite horror film ever.
This advancement in America was only possible through investment in education and science.
Over the last year, we have absolutely destroyed our scientific and educational infrastructure.
Look to other countries for the next major advancements.
How can one compete with this???
I finally got to watch this stunningly clear explanation of transformers from the amazing Idan Blank. I agree with Ev, Idan is the best teacher I know. This lecture is a gift to the field. Thank you Idan!

🤣🤣🤣 Now I can't unsee it 🫣
I had to check to make sure it's real. It is, and now I have lost hope.
Best review ever. Five stars, no notes
Some first-rate science writing: For this story, @jdrakephd.bsky.social carefully read our recent paper and then we spent a very fun 90 minutes or so talking on zoom. His article that gets right to the heart of our model, explains it clearly, and then explores why it will matter in the future.
This is addictive. Also, I need to start a new lab experiment about this...
