WHAT'S INVOLVED This course is all about making autobiographical comics inspired by childhood, taught by Sadie Levine! Sadie will be going over childhood being a rich stage of life to draw inspiration from, the fickleness of childhood friendships, diving into memory, creating characters, breaking the rules of reality, imaginations and inner worlds, and emotion-based storytelling. INSTRUCTOR Sadie Levine is an enchanted girl with magic powers and a completely firm grip on reality. She is normal in the brain and heart, and is definitely not even a little bit scared of butterflies. Sometimes she draws things. Sadie has worked as an editorial illustrator and has self-published many zines and a few children's books. She is the recipient of a Mini-Grant from the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo and the Grand Purchase Prize from the 10th Baker & Whitehill Student Artists' Book Contest. Text: Build Your Own Labyrinth" is an online laboratory where you will surprise yourself by creating comics in response to seemingly impossible (or simply absurd) rules that will push your creativity into unexpected new areas. But don't be intimidated: working with constraints is playful, like using your crossword or jigsaw puzzle mind in the service of art. You will lose yourself in a lucid trance of "deep play" and when you emerge, you'll be amazed at the directions your engagement with constraints has taken you. By the end of the workshop you'll have a handful of experimental comics under your belt but, just as importantly, you'll have a firm grasp of a radical and all-encompassing approach to creativity that you will continue to explore in your future work. Text: Instructor - Matt Madden is a cartoonist and translator who has also taught in art schools around the world. He known for his playful and inventive comics like the metafictional romp Ex Libris and 99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style (Penguin), a comics adaptation of Raymond Queneau's Exercises in Style which led to his initiation into Oubapo, The Workshop for Potential Comics, in 2005.

EVENT SCHEDULE Saturday, April II, II-6 PM 11 AM - GAZE Tabling begins! 12 PM - Workshop: Literary Comics with Lauren Haldeman. The class includes a short presentation proving that you don't need to be "good" at drawing to make comics. Anyone can do it, and do it well. Then we will have in-class exercise and a sharing session at the end. 1 PM - Panel: Presented by Graphic Comics Organization (GCO) 2 PM - Workshop: Button-making with Frankie D. Make your very own merch - buttons! Pins you can put anywhere: clothes, bags, totes, and so much more. 3 PM - Panel: Interviewing Barbara Brandon-Croft, presented by GCO. Brandon-Croft became the nation's first Black woman cartoonist to cross the color line into the mainstream press in 1989 with her cartoon feature Where I'm Coming From. 4 PM - Workshop: Making Comics with Eric Wolfgang. Geared toward all ages.

About the Instructor: Hannah March Sanders was born and raised in Georgia. She has a BFA from Tulane University in New Orleans and a Printmaking MFA from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Hannah enjoys rainy afternoons, 0.5mm Staedtler black ink pens, and the smell of old books. She is currently a Professor of Art at Southeast Missouri State University, where she is Area Head of Printmaking and Fibers and teaches all levels of Printmaking and Drawing.
