New post...In praise of the Theatre Critic.
In response to the demise of criticism at the Washington post I wanted to offer some positive words and suggestions of critics and podcasts that I think are worth following.

I’ve pulled together a February theatre round-up for London. What’s opening, what’s worth catching, and what you might have missed.
Useful if you’re trying to choose a show without disappearing down a dozen websites.

Lauren Gunderson - the most performed playwright in US (2024) iss crying out to be seen more in UK. The Revolutionists has just blown my socks off. I and You is wonderful. But where can you see her work in London or elsewhere?
I went straight to your exquisite review after seeing the show in London last week. Even with the cast change your criticisms ring true. The trend to ignore historical context continues. Which is odd given the source material is so richly interesting.
O! And while I think of it: if you have students, please tell them about Bard at the Gate which is available on Broadway on Demand. I want to encourage people to teach from this archive of amazing new plays, beautifully acted and designed in a week—rehearsal to video.
Sounds fab. I love finding a new play that I wouldn't have thought of.
Thank you @markravenhill.bsky.social ! I will order it.
Snap! Just the one I'm enjoying this evening. I had the pleasure of attending David Johnston's lectures when at Queen's Belfast.
I'd add another voice to The Other Place. An astounding piece of theatre.
Any suggestions for FUNNY Restoration or Spanish Golden Age comedies? I loved Rachel O'Riordan's Man of Mode years ago. Looking for something I can also integrate musicians. @petermarksdrama.bsky.social marksdrama.bsky.social @markravenhill.bsky.social @evincentelli.bsky.social
Wow - that's exciting. I'd love to see Marisha Wallace as Sally. I imagine she's a touch above Michelle Williams - who I saw in the Sam Mendes production.

Hi there. I teach theatre in the UK.
This is great! We will give this a go.
Inspired by @markravenhill.bsky.social here are some ideas when directing comedy. Any suggestions people?
Let the funny ones get on with it?
Key term: Punch word. That’s the important word in a punchline. The laughter trigger and it usually appears at the end of the punchline. Or near the end.
Great note @jasonpeck.bsky.social
Quite right! The dangers of interfering directors.

2. Benjamin Button ⛈️
3. Once 🎹
4. Spring Awakening 🥱
5. Come from Away 🧑✈️
6. Avenue Q 🧌
7. The Scottsboro Boys 🚂
8. Sweeney Todd 🥧
9. Parade ⚖️
10. Songs for a New World 🏠
Absolutely agree. Craig's Raisin in the Sun was one for the most memorable productions I've seen this year.
L'Addition @ Battersea Arts Centre is a joy of a show. The two clowns pull apart the fundamental problems with the show, before it even starts. Hilarious and playful. Go see it people.

Blood Show @ Battersea Arts Centre. I was handed a poncho and warned of the 70 litres of blood about to spurt onto the stage. It ended up rather tame but still an artful provocation.
Hello there. Lots going on here in South London. I do work with young people as directors and help them curate festivals of theatre.
