Honored to represent International Peace Institute at the meeting of the Global Alliance in Brussels. I hope the ministers of the EU listened and will finally take action. EU has leverage but doesn’t use it!

"Europe is now under siege and must urgently strengthen its power, because law without power is an empty slogan" In a nutshell, that sums it up. A masterful opinion piece by

As disruptive cyber campaigns extend out of conflict zones to impact everyone, @guehenno.bsky.social, Olivia Grinberg, Jason Healey write that the world needs a multistakeholder model for cyber peace, which requires cooperation between the private sector and international organizations.
Is there a plan behind Trump’s chaos? Maybe on the Middle East. Israel wants to kill 2 states solution, Trump doesn’t want another big war. Possible that he helps Israel kill 2-states solution with his unimplementable gambit on Gaza, while he reopens diplomatic track with Iran? Or not!

Good analysis by Lawrence Freedman on what Ukraine needs (not chinese troops, Wolfgang…😉) samf.substack.com/p/how-can-uk...
Ischinger’s is absurd: 1/Bringing China troops to Europe would be a provocation for Trump. 2/ Troops from countries not strongly committed to Ukraine would pull out if there was a risk of war. 3/ Ukraine would be as opposed to that “guarantee“ as Putin to the presence of NATO countries troops.

Europe did not go along with the transformations. Kishore warned already in 2013hat "that Asia is becoming the dominant force"
Al-Sharaa is right not to rush elections and constitution in Syria. But the longer the transition, the greater the need for an impartial broker to manage it & organize credible elections. Excluding the UN would be a grave mistake, that will only create very legitimate suspicions.
Excellent paper of @ecfr.eu Europe has leverage through its association agreement with Israel. It is high time it use it. ecfr.eu/publication/...
2/And external actors can make things worse. Syria can very easily slip into a civil war if Turkey encourages the Islamists to crush the Kurds, or if the Kurds & other non Islamists, supported by the US & Israel try to push back too far.
1/There is no peaceful society waiting to blossom when a monstrous dictatorship collapses. There is hate and lack of trust & social capital. #Syria needs enlightened leaders to overcome desire for revenge and retribution.
#Dohaforum Haka Fidan FM of Türkiye: we don’t want PKK or Daesh to take advantage of the situation.
Thinking of all the Syrians, exiled, tortured, murdered, who will not have seen that day of hope.

Giving outliers a chance > scaling up
Useful to challenge the post-Draghi consensus, and food for thought for EU regulators.
The Guardian view on Europe’s duty to Ukraine: solidarity must not waver in the age of Trump | Editorial
The meeting of Nordic countries and Poland sends a strong message to Russia , to Trump, and to the rest of Europe that there is a group of frontline states that are willing to take risks to prevent a defeat of Ukraine.
One can argue whether a legal process is the best avenue to stop the war in Gaza, but if one believes that international justice can help build the rule of law in international relations, making a distinction between our friends and others is an insult to the very idea of justice.
Courageous piece by Gideon Levy: “The prime minister and former defense minister are being tried by the world, because the world saw and could not hold its silence. If it had, the court in The Hague would have been derelict in its duty."
If Europe lets Ukraine down, Russian tanks may not roll into the Baltic States but the abandonment of Ukraine, coming after the commitment of the last two years will deal a mortal blow to the European ambition of a political Europe. Putin will just have to pick European countries one at a time,
