BREAKING: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán concedes defeat to Peter Magyar after "painful" election result, ending 16 years in power.
😮🇭🇺🗳️ THIS IS MASSIVE. Hungary’s parliamentary election turnout hit 74.23% by 5pm (62.92% at this point in 2022; final: 70.21%).
Opposition stronghold Budapest is at 77.18%, big cities 75.55%.
Final turnout is set to exceed 80% – unprecedented.
Polls close at 7pm CET.
Tens of thousands chant “Russians, go home!” at tonight’s anti-Orbán concert in Budapest’s Heroes’ Square ahead of Sunday’s Hungarian election.

: Half of UK universities face a deficit next year. Up to 50 could close.
That is a sector in crisis. Simply blaming a tuition fee freeze and nudging fees up with inflation is not a plan. Where is the long-term strategy for higher education?

Did you know today is International Men’s Day?
I’m spending it writing about Italy’s disabled WWI veterans and their family lives under fascism - a world far more complex than the usual tale of ‘sacrificial patriotic heroes’.
