I came across an old folder containing photos I took while we were in #Tucson, Arizona, several years ago, and found this photo of a hybrid Sonoran/San Esteban spiny-tailed iguana. It's among the large population at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. #herps

Good morning, everyone. I've discovered an old folder of unedited photos on my laptop, and there are some bird photos in it! Here's a great egret that was at our campground's lake in #Tucson back in March 2023. #Birds #Arizona

For today's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #Perches&Petals, here's a yellow-rumped warbler on a blooming four-wing saltbush in Deming, New Mexico, last week. #Birds

Two small ducks are standing in very shallow water. The leftmost, a hen, is different shades of light brown and the rightmost, a drake, is a beautiful shade of brown (some might call it cinnamon), with a bit of blue feathers on the wing showing.

Good morning, everyone. Here's a cinnamon teal pair at Cochise Lake, from our recent visit to southeastern #Arizona. I'd seen this beautiful species before, but it was good to see them from a closer viewpoint. #Birds

A larger bird with long legs and a long, gently curving bill is wading in very shallow water. It is standing in side profile. It is mostly brown, with multicolored iridescent feathers at the end of its wing. The face immediately behind the bill is mostly pinkish-red (although I guess there must be some white in there), and the eye is deep red.

Prior to our stop in Willcox, #Arizona, earlier this month I'd only seen white-faced ibises in flight. At Cochise Lake, however, there were several going about their wading business. #BirdOfTheDay #Waders #Migration

I've found that, along with American robins, white-crowned sparrows are among the most patient birds when being photographed. This is a very tight crop of one in Clark County Wetlands Park, just southeast of #LasVegas, in February. I was about 20 feet away. #HeadShots #BirdOfTheDay #Birds

Thanks, Justine -- that was the best photo out of about 20 that I took (most with the bird out of frame).

A very small bird is perched on a small twig in a tree. The bird is mostly gray and light-olive green, with a darker striped wing pattern. The eye is dark, with an irregular white ring around it. The bird is perched in side profile and facing the upper right corner of the image.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #LeafAndLight; here's a ruby-crowned kinglet, which was a lifer for me in late February at #SpringsPreserve in #LasVegas. Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Merlin app describes ruby-crowned kinglets as "hyperactive" -- that is a significant understatement. #Birds

Good morning, everyone. Here's a crew of wading #Birds looking to stir up some trouble at Cochise Lake in southeastern #Arizona earlier this month. That's an American avocet at the top, a killdeer at the bottom, and some kind of sandpipers (least, maybe?) at the sides. #Migration

Here's a pretty American wigeon hen on a pond in the ABQ BioPark, from a couple of years ago in #Albuquerque, #NewMexico. I've written before: watching female ducks provides an extraordinary sense of calm for me. #Reflections #BirdOfTheDay #Birds

Good morning, everyone. We're in southwestern #NewMexico for a couple of weeks, and both the blooming ocotillo and little verdin that we enjoyed while in Arizona are here as well. #Birds #Blossoms

The #BirdOfTheDay theme today is birds whose name starts with the letters #JKLMNOP. This northern shoveler was one among at least a thousand other migratory ducks on Cochise Lake in southeastern Arizona earlier this month. Very pretty ducks! #Migration #Birds

The campground in southeastern #Arizona where we stayed earlier this month set out Adirondack chairs to watch sunsets. The southwestern U.S. has some incredible displays. #StunDay

Several weeks ago this neotropic cormorant was hanging out in a pond in our Tucson, #Arizona, campground. Unlike other cormorants, neotropics will sometimes drop into the water while flying a few feet above in pursuit of a fish. #LongNecks #BirdOfTheDay #Birds

A sharply pointed peak rises on the horizon, with gently sloping mountains on its sides. Utility poles and a tractor-trailer are seen in the foreground; the semi is driving to the left side of the photo.

Philip St. George Cooke (1809-1905) was a career U.S. Army officer who is known as the father of the U.S. Cavalry. During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Cooke led the Mormon Battalion from Santa Fe to California on what would become known as Cooke's Wagon Road, which would later become the southern route to the California gold fields. He saw considerable action for the U.S. Army in the U.S. Civil War, and retired in 1873 as a brigadier general, with nearly 50 years of service to the Army.

Cooke's Peak (elev. 8,408 ft/2,563 m) is a prominent mountain in southwestern New Mexico. It's about 30 miles north of the city of Deming, from where I took this photo earlier this week. Interstate 10 passes by Deming. (More about Cooke in the ALT text.) #NewMexico #Geology #History

Good morning, everyone. Here's a savannah sparrow that was hanging out at Cochise Lake in southeastern Arizona last week. Rather than being named after the grasslands, savannah sparrows were named by ornithologist Alexander Wilson after the city in Georgia. #Birds #Arizona

Here's a mountain chickadee I photographed a couple of years ago near Pagosa Springs, #Colorado. Like other chickadees, this one found it challenging to stay still for more than a couple of seconds. #Woodland #BirdOfTheDay

A pair of ducks is resting in very shallow water; the hindmost duck is mostly white with russet-colored feathers on his underside, darker feathers on his wing and back, and an iridescent black-green head. The foremost duck is light brown with darker brown feathers over her entire body except for her head. Both ducks have rather long and robust bills; the drake (the hindmost male) has a black bill and the hen has an orange-brown bill.

I took a couple of photos of this northern shoveler couple last week in Willcox, Arizona, as they rested on the shore of Cochise Lake. If you've ever wondered what the underside of the northern shoveler's wondrous bill looks like, here you go. #Birds #Arizona #Migration

I took this photo this morning in a Deming, New Mexico, neighborhood. The house finch was about 50 feet (15 m) away, and the Moon (lower left) was 251,000 miles (405,000 km) away. Maybe tomorrow morning I can get both in focus (the bird will surely stay in that tree, won't he?). #Birds #NewMexico
