I came across an old folder containing photos I took while we were in #Tucson, Arizona, several years ago, and found this photo of a hybrid Sonoran/San Esteban spiny-tailed iguana. It's among the large population at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. #herps

Two small ducks are standing in very shallow water. The leftmost, a hen, is different shades of light brown and the rightmost, a drake, is a beautiful shade of brown (some might call it cinnamon), with a bit of blue feathers on the wing showing.

It is mostly brown, with multicolored iridescent feathers at the end of its wing. The face immediately behind the bill is mostly pinkish-red (although I guess there must be some white in there), and the eye is deep red.

I've found that, along with American robins, white-crowned sparrows are among the most patient birds when being photographed. This is a very tight crop of one in Clark County Wetlands Park, just southeast of #LasVegas, in February. I was about 20 feet away. #HeadShots #BirdOfTheDay #Birds

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #LeafAndLight; here's a ruby-crowned kinglet, which was a lifer for me in late February at #SpringsPreserve in #LasVegas. Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Merlin app describes ruby-crowned kinglets as "hyperactive" -- that is a significant understatement. #Birds

Several weeks ago this neotropic cormorant was hanging out in a pond in our Tucson, #Arizona, campground. Unlike other cormorants, neotropics will sometimes drop into the water while flying a few feet above in pursuit of a fish. #LongNecks #BirdOfTheDay #Birds

A sharply pointed peak rises on the horizon, with gently sloping mountains on its sides. Utility poles and a tractor-trailer are seen in the foreground; the semi is driving to the left side of the photo. Philip St. George Cooke (1809-1905) was a career U.S. Army officer who is known as the father of the U.S. Cavalry. During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Cooke led the Mormon Battalion from Santa Fe to California on what would become known as Cooke's Wagon Road, which would later become the southern route to the California gold fields. He saw considerable action for the U.S. Army in the U.S. Civil War, and retired in 1873 as a brigadier general, with nearly 50 years of service to the Army.

Cooke's Peak (elev. 8,408 ft/2,563 m) is a prominent mountain in southwestern New Mexico. It's about 30 miles north of the city of Deming, from where I took this photo earlier this week. Interstate 10 passes by Deming. (More about Cooke in the ALT text.) #NewMexico #Geology #History

A pair of ducks is resting in very shallow water; the hindmost duck is mostly white with russet-colored feathers on his underside, darker feathers on his wing and back, and an iridescent black-green head. The foremost duck is light brown with darker brown feathers over her entire body except for her head. Both ducks have rather long and robust bills; the drake (the hindmost male) has a black bill and the hen has an orange-brown bill.

The same pair of ducks as in the previous photo, but the hen has tilted her head 90 degrees while preening. The prominent ridges on the underside of her bill can be seen.
