Wouldn't be opposed to the death penalty after a detailed, fair trial that exposes all their iniquity for the world. And then abolish the death penalty.
But between "you can put certain assholes to death but the authoritarian train keeps rolling" vs. "no one gets put to death" I pick #2

That's what I'm saying. Things like that have a tendency to keep going past the point where you've shot all the people who actually deserve it.
(Besides, living an enforced lower-middle class existence would be absolute hell for Musk and Trump and their ilk anyway)
I think it's important that we DO think that way because the idea that we have to build a torture camp for our enemies doesn't lead anywhere good
No matter how much they "deserve" it
To give you an example of what I'm talking about, the carceral system desperately needs to be broken down and abolished in its current form. Does that mean we can't put Musk and Trump in jail? Or that if we beat them they'll continue to exist under more pleasant circumstances than those they harmed?
Anyway, happy Tuesday. Sorry.
The fact that concepts of justice and reason to which oppressors pay lip service have not been working for us doesn't mean they're inherently bad. We have to make justice work for us. Not just flip the oppressive script.
I believe we can do this, and that most people still want to do this.
You read enough about the Terror and the Soviet Revolution and it's pretty clear what happened, people's 100% righteous and correct fury bubbled up and spilled out uncontrolled and took out a lot of innocent people
It's not wrong to plan to prevent that shit
I am honestly hopeful enough to be thinking through how we can oppose these monsters without going "well we're going to have to guillotine a lot of people"
Yes, we have to make sure they can never harm anyone ever again. That doesn't mean a bloodbath, or an iron-fisted crackdown on freedoms, though
We keep hearing about how use of force, or anger, or even just straying about the bounds of good manners is "making us like them" and that's obviously dumb
But saying "we must adopt their cruelty" absolutely IS going to make us like them
This person was actually arguing in favor of cruelty. As in, cruelty towards those who oppress and are themselves cruelty to others.
But that's wrong. Our duty isn't to be cruel to bad people. It's to oppose them, forcefully and dispassionately, and to prevent them from harming others.
It wasn't even just self-harm, you could see them starting to turn themselves into a monster who could potentially harm others. I honestly think this is a real problem in left online spaces and I think it's adjacent to why some liberation movements curdle into authoritarian cruelty
So I just saw someone who was dooming so hard--about a valid issue they were right to oppose--that they seemed to be actively harming themselves mentally and were posting really dark and disturbing stuff.
I can't tell people not to feel despair but this is why I'm against Doomerism
The social media pivot from chronological timelines to popular-first was done at least partly to throttle real time organizing

I'll be honest with you, people don't like Keir on the door but it's not over this Mandelson thing. They don't like him personally
Great news boss, this Mandelson stuff isn’t cutting through on the doorstep because they already think you’re a cunt
Reminder if you are not gendervague do not say femboy hooters
Cosmism is inherently swagsexual.
You do not gotta hand it to Musk but he seems to be broadly in the right here
After building the best public education system in the world brought us the Counterculture and the Anti-War Movement, conservatives in the US began a 50+ year assault to destroy public education.
Discovered a bunch of these via WMU?!? I’d love to adapt Tanith Lees Night’s Master into a movie. Any of the “space westerns” of the late pulp era could make for a fun adaptation. And it’s not super obscure but I got as far as scripting a King in Yellow comic
The cyberattack on The British Library in October 2023 knocked out ebooks and almost ever other computer thing there for years.
Ebooks just came back. They were knocked out everywhere using the BL’s license (legal deposit libraries I think? More libraries?)
Distributed physical copies matter.
Telling people about the good, useful use cases for AI is kinda like telling people about the 30-50 feral hogs you need your AR-15 for
It is entirely true and yet so completely divorced from the lived experience of your audience that you sound ridiculous
We're going to achieve world peace strictly by the USA becoming officially recognized as the global villain everyone else hates and unites against
haha oh my god I wrote an entire spec pilot AND series outline for a 14-episode TV show adapted from Georgette Heyer’s THE MASQUERADERS, a book that nobody loves (or even remembers) except me and @schweizercomics.bsky.social
