Oh, she says well, you’re not a poor man. You know, why don’t you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet? And I says to her, I says, oh shit, you’re right. So I bought like fifty thousand envelopes. Filled the house with ‘em, toes to tits. It was horrible. We couldn’t take a step without tripping over a box of envelopes. We were going crazy trying to use them up, to make a little space for ourselves. Used them as toilet paper, coffee filters... it was a terrible time. Please don’t ask me about those goddamned awful envelopes ever again.

Lynne Thigpen as "The Chief" from Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego
Lock the fuck in, Gumshoes. Carmen Sandiego stole a priceless wax pressing of "One of These Nights" by the Eagles. You've got to stop her before she travels back in time to 149 BC Carthage and trades it to Scipio Africanus the Younger for a kilo of the good shit.

If it was a real attempt, wouldn't he have been furious about such a lapse in security? Fired people, called for an investigation? That's what seems fishy to me

Screenshot of sticker that says "best by" 4/17/26 that was taken January 13 2025. The "best by" font looks bubbly and dated
Calendar reminder to check if this is a meaningful day
NG found this sticker on a slipper over a year ago and we don't know what it could be for so we're choosing to believe that something consequential could happen tomorrow

Wages are outpacing "inflation". But if you say that to anyone whose rent is already disproportionately high they will call you insane

same chart with unemployment in the mix too. It's a big spike poking the mountain up
if you DO adjust for inflation, there's a gentle slope up with a weird mountain in the middle when covid happened. This broke a lot of people's brains, but it was because of that unemployment spike. Overall it's still higher than in 2019

chart from FRED of median weekly nominal earnings of workers 16 years and over. It goes from $875 to $1215 in 6.5 years
You could look at this and conclude that grocery prices went up 31% over 7 years, and that sucks, sure. But wages (not adjusted for inflation) are up at least 38% over that time period. FRED data for this only goes to Q3 2025

household grocery expenses, monthly. Honestly pretty steady until 2024
Our household grocery expenses were remarkably steady from 2018-2024, though the data is noisy. I should do a moving average. Note the spike in March 2020

Not super scientific obviously; I'm choosing what to buy and so the basket of goods changes. But I'm pretty meticulous. In 2022 I started breaking out non-food groceries (vitamins, coffee filters, etc) so that's why the colors change. I thought it was interesting how much those jumped up in 2024 too

column chart of my personal monthly food expenses since 2018. It's more steady than you'd think, but is ticking up since 2024
I'm seeing some affordability discourse again so I thought it might be fun to reshare some charts of my expenses since 2018. There's a jump in 2024, which, if representative of others' experience explains why inflation was such a big deal during the election

Imagine that at 2:02 am on Apr 10, 2011, a strange woman bangs on your door claiming to be your future self.
Wild eyes darting, hypervigilant. Hair like a bowerbird's nest. Was she dressed by a tornado?
"You don't UNDERSTAND," she says. "I need to STOP it!!!"
...stop what?
