I have copies of the pension records of six civil war vets in my family tree, one was shot and had chronic debilitating infections until finally amputating his leg 20+ years later, the rest escaped injury but had lingering chronic diarrhea that eventually killed them

Two-thirds of the deaths of soldiers in the American civil war were due to disease

it’s so funny that the drunk tv host in charge of the military is like “real warriors don’t need vaccines” when all the greatest generals in history would have done anything for a jab that kept their armies safe from disease

Monterey Park becomes the first city in California to ban "all data centers within city limits" Residents of the small enclave east of LA not only killed their city's proposed 250,000 square foot data center, they pushed city council to ban them altogether

Last night, after an hours-long public hearing, Monterey Park became the first city in California to pass an ordinance permanently banning data centers.

The city council voted unanimously to declare data centers a public nuisance, and to "prohibit all data centers within city limits."

My story:

Great piece that reiterates something everyone who is not a weird bay area freak or sucked into the AI hype cycle understands implicitly. There's no magic left, these people have barren imaginations.

apparently the only picture on the Internet with a carnation frozen chocolate malt in it. It’s the 80’s (probably) and a stadium vendor on a sunny day at Candlestick park is carrying a red plastic tub of them with a strap over their shoulder that looks like a seatbelt and holding a malt out to someone sitting to the left of the person holding the camera. The malt is out of focus but you can still tell that the red and white paper cup is frosty. we used to be a country

illustration of what might be some kind of fantasy funeral rite. The illustration is two colors and stylized, in the foreground is a group of robed priestess holding hands over a long sword. In the background a bandaged corpse lays on an altar among arches shelves of bottles and detritus.

The first screens in cars were to keep children entertained, and if they were placed so the driver could see them you’d get a ticket

I hate all touchscreens, no exceptions.

We must require ALL data centers and other extremely large corporate users of electricity to generate their own electricity at their own expense If we don't do this, we are either idiots and/or masochists.

A lot of people are still in the denial about how much the median Democratic voter, the median Democratic volunteer, and the median Democratic activist has shifted on a variety of issues. Well here's the handpicked candidate of Chuck Schumer being booed, about Gaza, at the Dem convention.

Uber ballot initiative sparks showdown with lawyers, doctors Lawyers and doctors oppose Uber’s proposed ballot initiative, which would cap contingency fees and limit recoveries for medical costs from car crashes.

CALIFORNIA: Those scare ads for legislation limiting medical settlements that quote the LA Times are paid for by Uber because they want to limit how much they can be sued for when they hit you with their cars. calmatters.org/economy/2026...

Two lines of three dimensional sans-serif letters colored in gradients of blue and purple reading ‘Maybe it will/Happen today’. Above the ‘y’ in’ today’ and with its bottom point nestled neatly into the fork of the letter it’s a similarly dimensional golden pentagram with little flares of golden light glinting off its vertices. The entire lockup is superimposed over a glittering rainbow as it all streaks together through a black void.
