Factory education. It’s not commensurate with human evolution. Children need to find wonder and inspiration in education. And well trained teachers are able to provide this - if they are allowed.

I suspect this is what many state education programmes have in mind for the future of education, anyway, once they integrate AI. Adults will be there only for crowd control. And maybe, sometime in the not too distant future, +14s will only be offered off-site provision.
I think teachers who plan their own lessons and answer impromptu questions soon get caught out for ‘thin’ knowledge, while those who are expected to deliver standard pre-provided visuals to groups who sit in silence note taking then filling in online quizzes might as well be teaching assistants…

Obviously visual aids like power point and later, moving image greatly enhanced the HE lecture. But that gradually moved to bullet pointing the features of the assignment and giving examples of model answers. Eventually students expected to get top grades for simply parroting the examples. 😑
When I first started teaching in HE (and all through my own UG studies) there were few visual aids. Students took notes in lecture & were then expected to read around the subject. I was told by older tutors *not* to lecture on the specific assignment question because it narrowed their research!
It’s true that education got more ‘big data’ focused around the same time (probably because big data got easier to analyse via IT advances) and ‘transmit and test’ replaced holistic teaching practice. The ‘is this on the exam’ student focus then commonly arose, as I remember.
#EduSky #AcademicSky this thread is an excellent discussion of the attrition of independent learning and abstraction skills. I retired from HE teaching just before Covid, and had observed this happening from around 2010 onwards. First iPhone: 2007. Coincidence? 🤔

Just a professor standing in front of BlueSky demoralized because exams my students used to get a mean of 83% on prior to 2020 are now failed in large numbers. It seems that their ability to APPLY concepts to new contexts/domains has all but disappeared.
I love these students & I am worried.
… so he jumped in the direction that didn’t make waves (IME, many years ago, of working in Westminster this is what most civil servants would do) and now he has to take the rap - operationally, it is his fault. And the public will never find out about all the underlying issues. 😑
… and this may have something to do with knowing where each other’s bodies were buried (I hope not literally). The PM may have then presumed it could be pushed thru, and let the civil servants get on with it. The PUS may then have been caught on the horns of a terrible dilemma…
Isn’t this the crux of the matter, assuming that the clearance was a formality, and making the announcement of the appointment before the clearances were completed? Call me cynical, but someone, somewhere wanted Mandelson, very badly and I wonder if that came from the US.
Two Sunday mornings many years apart. Katie 2008-2024 on the right, Finn, born Autumn 2025 on the left. In the contemporary world of rapid and often worrying change, dogs give us continuity. #DogsOfBlueSky.
This.
Also why do we tolerate Presidency by social media posts?
When the world gets too complicated, there is always Finn… and mud. #DogsOfBlueSky.
Alternatively the petition could be re-written amend whatever legislation that decides how former PMs are remunerated. Maybe along the lines of receipt of this allowance is dependant upon…… And may be revoked if behaviour etc etc etc. Who knows I bet there’s a few MPs who would lend support.
Some of these agencies will consist of a web of private providers who are maximising their profits and giving the most basic services they can get away with. This needs to be brought to the public’s attention. Naming individuals may deflect from this.
Looks like we’re bankrolling Liz Truss to whiz around the world supporting far right initiatives for the rest of her life, fellow Brits. I wonder how much she will end up being paid for each day in office, in the end?
In NSW, 10-year-olds are sent to prison. That is too young.
Carlie from the Cottage is one of the leaders featured in this series of videos - saying that raising the age of criminal responsibility in NSW is an opportunity to do better for kids and communities.
For all our mutual followers on what was EduTwitter: Chris is on BlueSky now and will have a new book ‘Coda’ published later this year. I’ve recently read a draft and can highly recommend. #EduSky #AcademicSky
James Bembridge on X: Hate is too weak a word for what I feel towards the NHS. I'd tear it down and salt the earth upon which it stood.
Lovely people, these Reform UK candidates for the upcoming election, and great to know they're on our side.
Could MattGPT face scrutiny under the UK’s ‘proceeds of crime’ law? The British right is awash with money from Orban thinktanks…which Hungary’s new PM says was stolen.
Brilliant deep dive into Orban’s vast UK network by @McCoolingtons

To be fair I don’t have readers if I have my contacts in and I’m over 60. But that’s because my sight is corrected with contacts in quite an eclectic way, I’ve always needed sight correction. Bearing in mind he has never been seen in glasses in public, or in childhood photos, it is odd.
NEW: Keir Starmer responds to Donald Trump’s threat to row back on trade deal the US signed with UK last year, amid sharp differences with White House on US approach to Iran conflict.

'You write beautifully, and I was glad to have read this. It's a very lyrical and powerful piece, and a great insight into the challenges of living with a dementia sufferer but also the unexpected joys to be found even in difficult times.'
