In the United States you have regions and populations that over-supply recruits because that's how empires work but seems doubtful Britain can still scour its shires or Irish plantations

So imagine you are one of the young people in these countries, you have no siblings, college is free, you can move to like 20 something different countries with comparable living standards if you don't want to stay home, you're joining the army?

This all fits into the broader pattern of contemporary European military investments being something of a comedy routine, because you can build all the weapons systems and jets you want but if you can't hire anyone to operate them because college is already free and nobody has kids anyway...

Was just reading that they are going to ban cigarettes in the UK, which is funny because I remember reading last year the UK's military was saying it was itself unfit for purpose, and now I'm trying to imagine a military that doesn't have cigarettes going to war, they'll have to make that a perk!
