_**Syd Barrett - Olympia Exhibition Hall, London, England, June 6, 1970**_ Syd Barrett would’ve turned 80 years old this week — a fact that feels kind of unbelievable. Not only did Syd more or less disappear from view in his 20s, leaving his youthful self trapped in amber, but his music still feels way more modern than most of the psychedelic sounds he inspired. Barrett has a way of staying fresh, weird and original, no matter how many decades go by. Speaking of fresh, weird and original … here’s Syd in June 1970, making his only live appearance as a solo act (though he’d later attempt an onstage comeback with Stars). Backed by his Floyd replacement David Gilmour on bass and John Shirley on drums, it’s an abbreviated four-song set, technical difficulties abounding until Barrett unplugs his guitar and walks off into the mist. But it’s worth a listen, with rare renditions of “Terrapin,” “Gigolo Aunt,” “Effervescing Elephant” and “Octopus” unspooling in that unmistakable Syd fashion. Good reminder that Barrett was an incredibly cool guitar player with a relaxed-but-sinister style that’s tough (if not impossible) to replicate. **_Robyn Hitchcock_**** _:_** There’s a truth in Barrett’s lyrics that is conjured by words but lies beyond them. And there’s an honesty in the way Syd seemed to write down what was exactly in his head, without adjusting it for the perspective of others. To me, listening, it was and still is, like I’m seeing the world through his eyes. His songs have a vivid personality. Even as he approaches the musical abyss, his turn of phrase is exotic and intense.
