Mark making on the bodies of the female saints in the Katherine Group. And not one independent thought was witnessed within it.

Colour me shocked. I'm so angry you and your students and the discipline are being treated like this

Reprehensible. The wanton cheek of the 'new, improved' curriculum comment is just salt in the wound. I hope it haunts them.

That's interesting. There's something about the implied sense of legacy/lineage with 'saga' that works. Saga of place? Place saga?

Is there a word for the kind of novel that explores one locality or phenomenon over a huge span of time, often with discrete but interlinked narratives? I'm thinking Adam Thorpe's Ulverton, Benjamin Myers' Cuddy, Andrew Michael-Hurley's Barrowbeck, Sarah Hall's Helm.

@daphneharries.bsky.social this sounds like one for you!

Oh thank you! I really hope you like it. It's very short so won't take nearly as Middlemarch 😂

They're on a roll this year aren't they?! I thought this too!

Ohhh I've been on a big Hardy read fest this year! I share your enjoyment. The Woodlanders and Return of the Native are my favourites. I haven't read much Atwood (The Handmaid's Tale and Oryx and Crake, was that her?) - i'll have to check out Lady Oracle

If you don't like it you can always use it as a girthy weapon!

I enjoyed it; good if you want a long meander that wanders through the interactions of a community. She's very good at describing difficult feelings.

I never read it for UG, this was my first time! I did enjoy it, would you ever be tempted by a re-read?

Also my favourite character in Middlemarch was Farebrother, who would be played by Alex Jennings in my head-casting. Kind and noble but human, has a hobby, devoted to his weird rag-tag female family members, laissez-faire attitude to faith.

It took me pretty much a month of reading it before bed (it turns out stonking fat nineteenth century novels are great for getting me to sleep)

I want to carry the aura of Dinah. I will never carry the aura of Dinah.

AGREED. For me, Middlemarch exceeds both Mill and Adam Bede (written with much love for all). Next stop for me is Silas Marner.

Hitchcopse by Cothill Fen - my favourite bluebell spot. There are also cuckoos there which I've heard very early in the morning
