Actually, no, looking it up again, it appears that the threshold would be the same either way. That said, we would have to amend the constitution for it somehow.

My understanding is that any single payer policy in California would have to reckon with that. iirc the choice it has is either being strictly a ballot prop and having a higher threshold to passing or making its way through the legislature and requiring 50%.

Can you expand on this? My understanding is that CalCare itself seeks to amend the constitution of the state itself.

He also has a maxed out donation from Chevron fwiw.

He has also conspicuously refused to endorse our homegrown single-payer legislation that has been mysteriously dying in committee or at least not making it to a floor vote in the assembly.

His pitch on healthcare is "I supported single-payer in congress in the 90s, but also it'd be very hard because we need to get federal waivers and reform ERISA so idk man."

Which is made all the more suspect by his maxed out donation from the former CEO of Molina.

Fwiw my main contention with Becerra is that he's not really running on much of a platform. I respect his experience and qualification, but he's given indication that he's not particularly interested in fighting for progressive policy.

Having several friends with varyingly severe mental illness who struggled to get what they needed out of treatment I can absolutely affirm this.

He also has a maxed out donation from the former CEO of Molina! People need to take into perspective what "experience" and "qualification" even mean if the candidate in question is just an entirely boilerplate technocrat with evidently no desire to change anything about California.

What Steyer has is courage, ambition, apparent well-intention, and more money than god to work in service of those intentions. Perhaps that's what this state needs to reorient itself towards the progressiveness of its residents. Perhaps Steyer will be a flop. Or perhaps he'll manage what no one did.

And so far as I've seen any such courage from Becerra its been little to none! If I had any reason to suspect that he truly was a progressive and that he was simply playing it cautious, I'd be more interested in him. Then I look at his donors.

You have no idea how many variations a politician can think of for "I'm for single payer healthcare, but..." before declining to offer any meaningful contribution to the bill and pretending like nothing happened. This isn't a matter of "realism" or "pragmatism" its about political courage.

See, I don't think its pie-in-the-sky and having watched CalCare (California's homegrown single-payer policy) as a movement, each time its died in committee or not made it to vote in the assembly its always been for ambiguous and decidedly bad faith reasons.

I don't doubt that experience and qualification mean something. Perhaps it means a whole lot and someone with actual political experience can come in here and show me the error of my ways. But I don't think we live in an era where we can just defer to experience and hope for the best anymore.
