Have you ever found yourself quoted online for something you never said?

We've seen a few examples of academics having their voice used for quotes they never said in fake news websites and in AI chatbots – but think there's a lot more

If that's you shoot me a DM or comment here

Reclaiming the Future How progressives can defy populism and fatalism – the founding essay of Arguably

‘Rather than a politics of generational warfare, we need a politics of generational solidarity… We must cherish social infrastructure – parks,
libraries, piers – and moments of communal joy.’

@georgeeaton.bsky.social on how community can help reclaim the future:

Speaking on Sky this AM about Mandelson, energy sec Ed Miliband says:

"Prime ministers make errors. Prime ministers are fallible. Prime ministers are human. As you know, I steered well clear of Peter Mandelson when I became Labour leader in 2010. But people make mistakes."

🚨 Olly Robbins is currently giving evidence to the Foreign Affairs Committee.

"I've been a civil servant for a quarter of a century. I could recite the code to you and I believe it, along with probably the Book of Common Prayer. It's one of the two things I kind of can hold in my memory"

I can't wait to read this. The loss of Paul Auster is still deeply sad.

One of my favourite authors for years, after picking up a copy of the New York Trilogy at random as a teen, but all of his work from the early poetry, to classics like The Book of Illusions and Invisible, were just flawless.

Olly Robbins' bombshell evidence so far:

* The Cabinet Office suggested there was no need to vet Mandelson *at all*

* No 10 applied 'constant pressure' on Mandelson to approve Mandelson's appointment and took a 'dismissive' attitude to vetting

* Mandelson was given access to the FCDO building, to low classification IT and to 'higher classification briefings' before he was granted security clearance

* No 10 showed **no interest** in the actual vetting. The entire focus was on getting Mandelson to Washington as quickly as possible

The Case for Replacing Keir Starmer If Labour MPs don't act soon then they risk losing their century-long position as the dominant party on the left of British politics

Reform really should be an absolute gift to a sitting government. Deeply target-rich opposition leader who is badly tainted by Trump. Back rank of even more unlikeable characters. Real nervousness among voters about them.

That Labour is still doing so badly shows exactly why Starmer needs to go

"I walked into a situation in which there was already a very, very strong expectation, coming from number 10, that [Mandelson] needed to be in post and in America as quickly as humanly possible," Olly Robbins tells MPs.

"There was a generally dismissive attitude to his vetting clearance"

‘I wished for death’: Sexual violence in Israel’s prisons is an ‘organised state policy’
Palestinian testimonies reveal how sexual violence, including rape using objects and dogs, is approved by 'highest levels' of Israeli leadership

‘I wished for death’: Sexual violence in Israel’s prisons is an ‘organised state policy’ Palestinian testimonies reveal how sexual violence, including rape using objects and dogs, is approved by 'highest levels' of Israeli leadership

The testimony here about sexual violence by Israel against Palestinian prisoners is so beyond the pale everyone must see it.

It is so bad I can’t in good conscience share a quote other than the headline, which somehow manages to understate the horror within.

The Mandelson-Epstein emails – what do they reveal about Britain’s broken lobbying system?

❌ The Mandelson-Epstein emails again highlighted how the UK's lobbying transparency regime is woefully inadequate.

Poor transparency allows well-connected individuals and companies with deep pockets to influence decisions that should be made in the public interest.

Burning wood for power worse for climate than gas equivalent, report finds Research casts doubt on plans by UK government to offer subsidies for carbon capture attached to the power source

It's 2026. The question isn't which thing can we burn to produce electricity that is slightly less worse than the other things we burn.

Building new infrastructure to burn things in 2026 is peak stupidity and greed.

Luckily solar, wind and storage are cheaper.

Nigel Farage Has Personally Accepted £675,000 from Foreign Sources Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has accepted more than half a million pounds from foreign companies, governments, and donors while serving as an MP, DeSmog can reveal. Since July 2024, when he was elect...

A new scoop from @writesbright.bsky.social for @desmog.com with The Mirror 👇

The £675K pocketed by Farage from foreign governments, companies & donors dwarfs his public salary.

For me, this begs the question, Farage is Minister of Parliament for... who exactly?

"gender critical or religious views" oh interesting. Can I support the Taliban's extreme interpretation of Islam and call for the downfall of the decadent west, and then sue anyone who tries to stop me? Or are those not the religious views we're talking about?
