The "relative" thing also always seemed to invite subjectivity (attitudes, desires, etc.) into affordances, but this seems exactly what Gibson wanted to avoid by proposing affordances instead of following the Gestaltists. I know, I know, Aufforderungscharakter is less catchy.

Of course the cat will perceive different gaps between its body and the chair than a human... and sure, these gaps don't exist if the cat is not there. A human and a cat perceive different relations in this (trivial ?) sense. Affordances, if these are affordances, might be "relative" in this sense.

The "relational" part confused me for a long time. One of the core moves of Gibson is that we can directly perceive relations. This is not equivalent to affordances being "relative". But relations can be in the environment or between organism and environment, and that (to me) muddied the waters.

The Darts Regulation Authority has banned transgender women from competing in its women's events with immediate effect.
The DRA, which governs the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), said "only biological females should be eligible to compete in women's tournaments regulated by DRA Rules".
It comes after the DRA completed a review of its Trans and Gender Diverse Policy, which began in 2025.
Noa-Lynn van Leuven, who in 2024 became the first transgender woman to compete in the PDC World Championship, said the decision had "effectively retired her".
She remains eligible to play in open tournaments for men and women.
" just got an email and apparently | just got retired, not by choice but because l am no longer allowed to compete," Van Leuven said in a video posted on Instagram.

Looks like they’ve banned trans women from playing darts now of all things. Comes to something too when BBC Sport are quoting Sex Matters, and the DRA has commissioned noted transphobe Emma Hilton to helm a report for them. It’s a stitch-up, and it’s disgusting.

You might want to switch to something more relaxing like watching a movie. Maybe Threads or The War Game.

Quelqu'un a demandé à une IA de résumer les controverses au sujet de IPF, et l'IA me crédite. Pendant ce temps, google refuse d'indexer mon blog 😂

But if you just think: this is dumb, soufflés can't count, let's add everything together immediately, the recipe will fail because the eggs will coagulate etc. In that case, the recipe has a kind of occult wisdom.

One fun example, from Hervé This, is adding eggs "two by two" in a soufflé. It works, even though soufflés can't count and it seems irrational. The reason (as he found out) is simply that it gives the soufflé the time to cool down... So you can just add the eggs all together after you wait a bit.

What is also interesting is that even when a "why" is given, there's no guarantee that is the correct explanation, because it's most probably a retrospective rationalisation... And who's testing the explanations systematically ?

4 weeks ago 0 0 1 0

There is some kind of cultural selection at play: what works sticks, what doesn't disappears. Claude Fishler calls this a form of "occult wisdom". But what "works" doesn't mean it's the most efficient or the only way of doing it. There's probably some overimitation at play too.

More than that: this whole first section is him telling he's made of the stuff of others: mother, brother, father, tutors, friends and, of course, the gods and Fortune. Very far from the ideology of the self-made man.

Les jeunes d'aujourd'hui doivent commencer toutes leurs phrases par "en vrai" et les finir par "en fait", sinon ils ont plus le droit à leur bourse. Ca faut s'informer hein.

Dude wrote a 173 page footnote on a marginally related topic, prefacing it with “I have omitted much that I would like to have said... [and] I have written much that few will read."

Jean-Louis Baudry/The Apparatus1 | Camera Obscura | Duke University Press

J-L Baudry's The Apparatus basically argues for the analogy between movie immersion and dreams (with a psychoanalytic lense which I find annoying, but ymmv). Noel Carroll critiques this in Mystifying movies.
I'm interested in reading more on the subject, so please share if you find something good :)
