Those of us who have sat at the bedside of a parent dying in agony, begging for death are not supporting assisted dying for selfish reasons, because “we can’t take the pain”. Rather we are asking for it out of compassion… we don’t want another human being to have to go through what our parents have

Agree e need better palliative care but my FiL has amazing care at the end and still suffered terribly, begging to die for weeks. This is not an either/or choice we need better palliative care and an assisted dying option

Spot on… this is exactly the kind of legislation that would benefit from a citizens assembly. It will be interesting to see the final numbers coming from the parliamentary vote this week because I suspect it won’t align with polling of the public
