Oh NO! I had not heard about the latter part yet…

I think it’s Yannick, re: the not very good arrangement of one of Price’s pieces that he programmed for Vienna New Year Concert?

My mother is in the “draw me a map” camp of directions communication. My dad will rattle off the route usually with cardinal directions- he got me used to tracking that on my more regular drives so I usually keep an idea of where North is

If I am giving you directions to a nearby place and I ask, “do you prefer cardinal directions or turn right/left,” do you know what I mean by cardinal directions?

I’ve had it happen several times recently where the person did not.

Women make up half of this world and The Cleveland Orchestra spared 30 minutes combined across 23 concert programs in Severance for pieces written by women.

And based on the guest conductors hired, I’d only have to pay out two dollars among 11 guest conductors across 13 weeks. Plus three more for the three pieces composed by women across the entire classical season/EU tour/S Florida residency.

Today, @clevelandorch.bsky.social announced their 2026-27 season, and if I asked their MD the classic Billy on the Street question “For a dollar, name a woman,” based on what works he’s has chosen to program in his final, legacy-sealing season in the position, I would keep all my dollars.

I'm old-fashioned. I want your business to have a website. Don't gimme an Instagram page and a phone number. I wanna see what services you offer and then make an appointment on a regular degular website!

It's not just that Orbán losing inspires hope in other competitive-autocratic countries ruled by right-wing nationalist authoritarians. It's that his loss materially changes things in those other countries, because he's been operating as a headquarters and funding source...

"Why don't Americans-" The ruling class of America has intentionally disempowered its citizens spread across 3,000+ miles of land and then funded the police force as an occupying army that happily murders anyone who opposes them and imprisons whoever is left as slave laborers. So phone calls it is

I am not one of those who believes that history repeats, but consider the following from Herodotus: the Oracle at Delphi told the fabulously wealthy King Croesus that if he invaded Persia he would "destroy a great empire." Croesus invaded and lost--the empire he destroyed was his own.

Pope Leo XIV carried the cross across all fourteen stations for over an hour.

The prayers named children who had been “taken away and imprisoned during protests, deported by policies devoid of compassion, shipwrecked on desperate journeys of hope, killed in war zones, and wiped out in death camps.”

Just so you understand, this is as if you prepared for argument in front of a panel that included Cookie Monster, and Cookie Monster asked you a question about cookies, and you had not thought about cookies in advance.

On the elder side of the millennial generation, checking in. I was pretty lucky to have computer classes regularly beginning in elementary school, and started Mario Teaches Typing probably in 4th or 5th grade.

I’m repeating op in their second post, but there exist people in this world, in our country, in your community who are fine with, and indeed deeply desire a return to chattel slavery.

I saw the early posts she was making about the London attack and got very nervous. Given how much worse it got, hope everyone takes a second to unfollow Hend.

I'm seeing a lot of these fake Donald Trump truths being posted on BlueSky (and lesser sites) at the moment. Its pretty easy to check, and you owe it to yourself and other people before sharing it.

Three guest conductors will have two weeks at LA- one white man, one white woman, and one woman from the Global Majority.

This is in line with LA’s trends in hiring per my data. They were well ahead of peers in this work though I think they could still make progress toward full gender parity

4 guest conductors are part of the Global Majority (two of them women), for ~20% of the hirings.

@laphil.bsky.social announced this week - to compare like with like b/n Chicago and LA, I won’t include Dudamel (3 weeks but not a laureate title) or Salonen (artistic partner while LA is still in search for Dude’s replacement)

19 guest conductors, 6 women (~30%)

The percentages worsen a little if I go by number of weeks rather than number of people hired when both Honeck and Szeps-Znaider have two weeks. I have also not included Muti as laureate, though I usually do in other orgs’ calculations.

We have hit a new high of 20% of slots going to people of color for 26/27, when prior high mark was 10%. 25/26 season announcement had zero conductors of color, so this is an important improvement.

I just wish Chicago could realize they can hire more women and women of color.

Ok, I had a chance to review @chicagosymphony.bsky.social 26/27 season announcement for my conductor database. 18/19-25/26, the high mark for gender parity among guest conductors was ~14% women in 21/22 and 22/22. 26/27 Chicago has slid back to ~10% of guest slots to women.

Just got a fundraising text for the Mills Campaign in ME ‘signed’ by James Carville and I really hate agreeing with Carville, but a dude unapologetic about his nazi tattoo is absolutely NOT the progressive choice

Chan’s Mahler 1 this summer was gorgeous. I told anyone in the building who would listen about Kopat having heard her play Prokofiev 2 with London Phil in NY in 2017. I am always way more interested in someone with a clear and strong artistic point of view, and she definitely has that in spades
