and of course as the etymology fan i am, i have to point out that "wrought" was the original past tense of "work" before the verb got standardized. "wrought" has been repurposed for "wreak," but that's a back-formation of sorts. this isn't even the first time i've seen that happen to a verb

something else i find really interesting is *how* you lower the carbon content of iron! you can't just burn it away easily. you have to basically blow air through the molten iron, and the oxygen bonds to the carbon and makes carbon dioxide. this is called the Bessemer process

in between at 1-2% is the sweet spot for strength of the metal, and probably the most well-known iron alloy: steel. though i should note that *stainless* steel is another thing altogether, that's when chromium is added (and a lot of it, like 10-20%)

at 2-4%, you get cast iron, which has a low melting point, making it easy to cast. at around 0.05%, you get wrought iron, which is very flexible. you still want at least a little carbon for strength and rust resistance

the way i understand it, traditional smelting of iron produces pig iron, which is 4-5% carbon. then you have to remove some of the carbon to refine the iron into a more useful form, because pig iron is too brittle to be useful

TIL that "cast iron" and "wrought iron" don't just refer to the manufacturing process--they're chemically different! cast iron is a carbon alloy and wrought iron is closer to pure, though still not entirely pure
