This is real but in order not to confuse people, you can organize a union in the United States with "manager" in your title as long as you don't have hire/fire power (in most unions). Not a knock against OP.

this is known as "soliciting grievances." it's illegal during a union campaign, *unless* the company can show it's something they do on a regular basis anyway.
