For them to have ever been correct about it, which is how you phrased it, they would have had to have been alive then.

None of these people were alive then or know anything about that. They aren’t remembering “the good old days”. They’re just ignorant.

Being presumed innocent means they are innocent in the eyes of the law unless or until convicted. It’s not as much of a difference as you suggest, especially in this context.
