"Such is their fear of jail, bankruptcy or reprisal, that most people I spoke to insisted on anonymity. This was in spite of the fact that many of the same people said Trump would only be restrained by powerful voices standing up to him." My Weekend FT essay. Please read it. on.ft.com/4hqblpr
I’ve been frustrated to see so much of the ongoing story about asylum seekers and the protests against them covered without hearing from those seeking asylum and now being met with hostility and hatred
I set out to speak to those directly affected to find out about the impact this is having 👇

Assad has fallen.
Overnight, a lot happened. Homs was captured by rebel forces, but most important: the capital Damascus has been captured and Bashar Al-Assad has fled. Everywhere, Syrians took out on the streets.
DAMASCUS:
1000s of prisoners have been freed from Sednaya prison, now flooding the streets, an monumental moment.
For many, the frantic search begins, desperate to know if their loved ones are among the living or the lost.
Either way, the "human slaughterhouse" is no more.
Momentous events in Syria this morning. The 54 year rule of the Assad family appears to be over, with rebel forces taking to state TV claiming President Assad has fled Damascus.
The prime minister has said he will hand over power to the opposition and has called for elections.

New thread: Assad forces completely pulling out of Homs.
BREAKING: Homs has fallen to the rebels as Assad's forces and regime sponsored militias completely withdraw from the city.
NEW: X has become a hotbed of neo-Nazi content under Elon Musk. We identified the operators of four anonymous accounts that share racist, antisemitic, and neo-Nazi content. Three live in Texas. Musk has replied to two of them. One works for the Navy.

Difficult to describe what a dangerous moment we are in.
The owner of Twitter/richest man in the world/closest adviser to the next US president is promoting a far-right Tommy Robinson (!) documentary to his 200 million followers.
This is the mainstreaming of violent, Islamophobic fascism.
I for one am amazed that Keir Starmer, five months after winning a 170 seat majority, has not called a fresh election after acceding to a random petition. Shameful stuff. www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/keir-s...
Seems like the last week has seen a lot of best best people from the other place all move here in a flurry. Find your favourite starter pack to get going.
This platform is genuinely becoming useful. It reminds me of the heyday of twitter when you could actually find the latest news, rather than the latest hatred.
Podcasts have never been more popular, but the industry feels like it's on fire. Layoffs and cancelations abound after years of deep-pocketed investment. I tried to decipher what's actually going on and what's at stake for Slate:

This is how you quit.
It would be great if absolutely everybody can help this story go viral, and get higher-level media attention, to contribute to the social and legal utter annihilation of every cop, judge, and politician involved.
Good to be invited. What journalist feeds or breaking news feeds should we be following?
