> The controversy associated with the statement “Ada Lovelace was the first computer programmer” reveals more about modern attitudes towards women [than her] achievements. [Her 1843 algorithm] was so advanced, that it was still utilised in record-breaking computation of Bernoulli numbers in 2008.

A digital illustration of two japanese lesbians flirting in a queer underground bar in the 80s. One of them wears a blue jacket, the other a suit, while in the background there's liquor and a multitude of little stickers and illustrations of lesbian and queer marks.
The full illustration I did for @taplingzines.bsky.social "We've Always Been Here"
The zine depicts queer couples throughout cultures and history and I had the honours of portraying a Japanese lesbian couple in an underground bar during the 80s✨

When you use AI to do your writing, you are telling your audience: “I deserve your attention, but you do not deserve my effort.”
Woods in winter, bare branches, silhouetted against city glow
The wood is full of shining eyes,
The wood is full of creeping feet,
The wood is full of tiny cries;
You must not go to the wood at night.

Over 120 years ago, a steam- powered elevator operated in the heart of St. Petersburg, Russia. It may sound like something out of a steampunk novel, but this remarkable invention existed. Built c. 1902 for a private residence, this elevator didn't rely on electricity. Instead, it used steam power, a cutting-edge solution at the time. It’s a stunning example of how technology and art coexisted in the early 20th century. The structure featured forged ironwork with floral patterns, typical of the Art Nouveau movement, which was flourishing in cities like St. Petersburg at the time. Inside the elevator, a beautifully crafted wooden bench invited passengers to sit and admire the surroundings. Far from being just a machine, this elevator was a symbol of luxury, innovation, and aesthetic sophistication. It operated using steam pressure generated by boilers installed in the basement - a method common before electricity became widespread in buildings. St. Petersburg, then the capital of the Russian Empire, was a hub of technological innovation and European influence. In neighborhoods like the Petrogradsky District, some early 20th-century buildings still preserve similar elevator shafts and decorative elements. This wasn’t just about moving between floors. It was about experiencing progress with elegance and grace. Source: Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, Department of Domestic Technology & Architecture. A steam-powered elevator in St. Petersburg, Russia, c. 1902–03. Installed in the house of Guard Captain S. Muyaki, it shows how even early elevators could be designed with extraordinary ornament and detail.

Love this thread. I had the pleasure of visiting Giverny about 20 years ago. As astonishing as the paintings are, the real thing is even more incredible.
Mask-off fascism, proud fascism, no ambiguity, no shame. It's repellent.
It's been said to death, I know, but naming your full-fash panopticon surveillance company after a plot element Tolkien mostly used to evoke corruption, distortion and the madness of kings really is A Choice.
If you vote for, or provide rhetorical cover for, any politician that allows Palantir permission to even speak to your government, then that politician is a nazi and so are you. This is as true in Britain as it is in America.

Wonderful, both image and camera. Those old box Brownies are near indestructible, aren't they?
Kathy in a leather jacket looking fierce
Happy birthday, Kathy Acker, a great writer and a lovely person. We saw a press screening of Cronenberg's Crash and Fire Walk With Me on opening night. In both cases, we were the only ones smiling at the end, laughing at the waves of movie hate all around us. Love you, Kathy.

Impressive strategy there :)
(Also, "I'm writing something" deserved a post of its own because that alone is a big deal for me right now.)
I want to be all gung-ho and "aha but not knowing what you're doing is so LIBERATING! I will EMBRACE it!" but I'm too low in confidence to walk that walk. It's not even particularly daring, it's just new, and yet it feels worryingly experimental.
I'm writing something completely different from most of the things I've tried before - different length, genre, likely audience etc. - and it's really unsettling. I have almost no frame of reference for whether it's working or not and I don't dare overthink it. #writing #rambling #procrastinating
A bit of light first-draft angst (let's not be hasty and call it writing yet) made 100% better by my rediscovery of the Arctic Icebreaker White Noise. Iykyk.
If you’re a Hachette author you should be talking to your editors and teams about this. If they’re using AI to counter AI, it’s still AI. And it may also be giving your work to the machine, serving it up on a contractual platter.
