⭐️ Elizabeth asserts:
WE ARE AT A TIPPING POINT.
THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF TYPERS AROUND THE WORLD AND MANY OF US ARE COLLEGE GRADUATES.
THE WORLD IS CHANGING AND WE NEED THE COMMUNICATION BILL OF RIGHTS TO PROTECT US FROM DISCRIMINATION.

Ignoring what thousands of spellers say works = practicing one third of evidence-based care.
🔒Evidence-based practice without the client’s voice is not science. It is gatekeeping.
☝️So when someone tells you text-based communication is not evidence-based, ask them which pillar they are standing on. They are not practicing evidence-based care if they are ignoring what thousands of spellers are telling us works.
🟰 Evidence-based practice has THREE equal parts, not one:
1️⃣ Internal and external research
2️⃣ The clinician’s expertise
3️⃣ The client’s own values and lived experience; which keeps getting left out.
This is ASHA’s own framework, not our opinion.
🧾 Elizabeth declares:
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE IS USED AS A WEAPON AGAINST NONSPEAKERS TO DENY US RIGHTS, AND IT IS A FALSE CLAIM.
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE HAS THREE COMPONENTS. CLINICAL EXPERTISE, PATIENT PREFERENCE, AND RESEARCH.
WE HAVE ALL THREE AND DEMAND TO BE CONSIDERED EVIDENCE-BASED.
🤝 We are not anti-therapy. We are pro-communication choice.
🔠 Text-based communication does not require expensive equipment, just our free C4A Academy instructional videos (communication4all.org/c4a-academy/...) and stencils to start.
💵 ABA is a billion dollar industry that does not support nonspeakers typing to communicate. ABA therapists can lose their ABA certification if they support typers.
🔒 ASHA has become a gatekeeper of communication at schools by taking a formal position against spelling and typing for nonspeakers. Speech therapists can lose their SLP certification if they support typers.
VD: Elizabeth gives her valedictorian address. She types on a keyboard as “Day 17, School Access Challenges” is overlaid. Elizabeth, Anshil, Dan, Alex, and a few other typers type with their CPs. Elizabeth’s computer screen reads the words that are spoken. She and Ginnie hug.
🔑 No more gatekeeping!
⭐️ Elizabeth reflects:
SCHOOLS ROUTINELY DENY NONSPEAKERS ACCESS TO THEIR PREFERRED METHOD OF COMMUNICATION.
THEIR SO-CALLED EXPERTS SAY THAT OUR TYPING IS NOT EVIDENCE-BASED, BUT WE ARE THE EXPERTS, NOT THEM, AND WE DEMAND TO TYPE AND SPELL IN SCHOOL.
🗣️ ASHA makes it harder to access certain communication methods. They are both influential and wrong.
🙅 The law does not require your child to communicate in a way convenient for the system. The system is required to support the way your child communicates.
⌨️ The ADA guarantees the right to effective communication everywhere, including schools, hospital and government buildings. Refusing to honor text-based communication in education and denying someone’s primary ACC access may be a federal violation.

⭐️ Elizabeth proclaims:
MY MENTOR JUDY HEUMANN TAUGHT ME THAT DISABILITY RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS.
NONSPEAKERS ARE JUST ASKING THAT THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT BE FOLLOWED FOR NONSPEAKERS.
THE BLIND HAVE BRAILLE AND THE DEAF HAVE SIGN LANGUAGE.
NONSPEAKERS NEED TO TYPE.

Communication is not just a skill you develop - it is a need you are born with. Denying nonspeakers access to communication is denying them their full humanity.
Humans are wired for connection; isolation from communication is documented to cause psychological harm.
Communication is how we make choices and exercise autonomy over our own lives. It is how we learn - asking questions, seeking answers, and engaging with the world.
💬 Communication is how we establish identity. It’s how we say “I exist. I matter. I am in here.” It’s how humans form relationships, build trust, and experience belonging. We use it to express pain, joy, fear, love, and need. Without it, our inner world is invisible to others.
🔠 My Voice. My Choice.
⭐️ Elizabeth proclaims:
COMMUNICATION IS A HUMAN RIGHT.
WITH TYPING, WE CAN BE EDUCATED AND LIVE HAPPY, PRODUCTIVE LIVES.
WE CAN TELL OUR PARENTS WE LOVE THEM AND BE MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITIES.

ℹ️ Myth vs. Fact: Nonspeaking Autism
⭐️ Elizabeth says:
THE BIGGEST MYTH ABOUT NONSPEAKERS IS THAT WE HAVE A COGNITIVE DISORDER. WE HAVE A MOTOR DISORDER.
