The image contrasts a woman being arrested by security officers in the USA with football fans from different nations watching a match. The words 'Fear' and 'Joy' are placed over the images.
There are just 10 weeks left. Millions of fans want to enjoy this tournament. But having one eye on the match and one eye on whether ICE is coming is no way to celebrate.
It’s time to act now and save the World Cup from being a stage for repression.
Stop the fear. Bring back the joy.
Over 500,000 people were deported from the USA in 2025 – six times more than will watch the World Cup final at the MetLife stadium in July.
Our new report today outlines the real risks to fans and communities that FIFA and host governments must urgently address. 👇

When ideas are hidden or censored, we go looking for them - because the freedom to read, learn, and think for yourself is a human right.
Books can change lives - and so can we.

When those in power try to silence us or cut us off from each other - by limiting education, censoring ideas, blocking news, or keeping the rest of the world in the dark - we don’t just sit back. We stand together. #WorldBookDay2026
US President Donald Trump’s fossil fueled bullying continues. A few profit from climate denialism; many will pay. Other countries must stand up & stop Trump’s destruction of the mechanisms we need to protect human rights in the face of the accelerating climate crisis. www.politico.eu/article/us-s...

This report exposes the growing power of the super rich, including their role in dismantling the infrastructure for ESC rights realization. Amnesty SG Agnes Callamard wrote a forward describing the links among turbocharged inequality, authoritarian practices, and human rights.
Our new report finds that billionaire fortunes grew 3 times faster in 2025 to highest peak ever. This concentration of wealth is reshaping democracy. Billionaire money changes who gets heard, who decides & who gets left behind ➡ africa.oxfam.org/latest/publi... #TaxTheSuperRich #WEF26
To get the SDGs back on track, govts must:
- Phase out fossil fuel investments + end subsidies
- Address the debt crisis
- Stop tax abuse via #UNtaxconvention
- #TaxtheSuperRich & those most responsible for the climate crisis: fossil fuel giants
Adequate finance for mitigation, adaptation, loss & damage and just transition is vital to protect millions especially historically marginalized communities. Yet the huge gap between what is needed, pledged & delivered leaves govts unable to fight #climatechange and achieve #SDGs
#COP30 failed to put people and planet over profits: no concrete commitments to phase out fossil fuels, stop deforestation or scale up grants-based finance for lower-income countries' climate action. Those least responsible continue to pay the highest price. bit.ly/49H4wMQ
Pie chart describing overall progress across SDGs target based on 2015-2025 aggregate data: 18% on track or met 17% moderate progress 31% marginal progress 17% stagnation and 18% regression
Lack of money for the #SDGs means not enough funding for health, education, housing & social protection in low-income countries that desperately need it to guarantee economic and social rights for their people. We’re now 4 years away from the 2030 target with 82% off track.
There is a lot of funding available to finance the #SDGs incl climate action, but not enough political will, particularly from high-income countries. We urgently need action rooted in #humanrights for global changes from taxation on wealth to ending fossil fuel subsidies. bit.ly/4aZIneY
At #WEF #Davos, the world’s richest will meet under “A Spirit of Dialogue”. But dialogue w/out multilateral cooperation & int’l law means nothing. While most of the #SDGs are off-track, authoritarian practices threaten peace, worsen the climate crisis & erode #humanrights. A 🧵
Spoke to the Guardian on amnesty’s 1978 World Cup campaign and how our expectations of bodies like FIFA have since changed.
It feels like change will come when either customers or sponsors revolt, monopolies are challenged or sport’s autonomy is regulated. And it may need a crisis to kick it off.
“Withdrawing from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in particular is unprecedented and the United States will be the only country to have done so.” www.amnesty.org/en/latest/ne...
Tax can be a powerful tool for realizing rights, but the U.S. govt has opted to instead protect the interests of large corporations. All eyes are on the still being negotiated UN tax convention, where states have the opportunity to enshrine a human rights promoting global tax agreement.
2025 has been an incredibly busy year for the @amnestybhr.bsky.social Team. Please take a look at some of our highlights from the past year.

Eyes on #COP30 crunch day:
Urgently tackling the drivers of climate change, including fossil fuels and deforestation, and providing money for countries to adapt and to rebuild without debt - MUST go hand in hand.
Humanity demands big steps and bold action.
