Very cool timeline of NIDDK milestones in kidney disease
Top 0.3%? Time to start posting!
That’s kind of like the Flight of the Concords “most beautiful girl (in the room)”
It is my duty (because who else will) to announce that the entire USRDS 2024 ADR is now available.

My dissertation is out in the world! "Medicare Advantage for People with End-Stage Renal Disease: Enrollment, Outcomes, and Mechanisms" deepblue.lib.umich.edu/handle/2027....
Don't forget to submit an abstract for the @academyhealth.bsky.social Annual Research Meeting today!
@jeffreydmarr.bsky.social great to hear you on Marketplace Morning Report today talking about health insurer use of artificial intelligence!
The story of Shep Glazer is mentioned here
But it deserves some longer contemplation:

Something kind of worked, from “difference-in-differences” standpoint (though the abstract doesn’t seem to report a DiD parameter estimate). Though it “worked” in a way that increased racial disparities which is concerning!
Not a lot of money, but it’s enough to analyze USRDS data (which are free; hint, hint). Ping me if you would like some pro bono support on methodology.

Exactly! And when insurers pass on the premiums they spread over all plan members, not just those with ESRD, so it is hard to see the effect (though I think @dmaanderson.bsky.social has done some work showing the size of the increase)
This is a great study linking Medicare data (via USRDS) with Colorado's all-payer claims database to examine how the ACA healthcare exchanges affected insurance choices and health care spending for dialysis patients. #nephsky
Great to see the final Increasing Organ Transplant Access (IOTA) model rule from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation released.

I'm looking for a Senior Research Scientist, ideally with experience with organ procurement and transplantation data. Maybe it is you or someone you know! recruiting.ultipro.com/ARB1002ARBR/...
Folks, if you haven't heard CMS/CMMI announced substantial (and very pleasantly surprising) changes to the voluntary kidney payment models for 2025 today, details at the link below.

No, the vibe over there is more “and he woke up in a bathtub full of ice”
The IOTA Model tests the effects of financial incentives on increasing kidney transplants by randomly selecting half of transplant hospitals for mandatory participation #nephsky #medsky #healthpolicy
4) Adjusting the quality strategy to allow for additional time for measure identification and stakeholder input, including removing three quality measures from the quality domain.
5) Removing the health equity payment adjustment and allowing the health equity plans to be voluntary.
2) Removing the requirement for providers to review organ offers declined on behalf of the attributed patient.
3) Adjusting the transplant target to reflect the average number of deceased or living donor transplants during the baseline years rather than the highest count.
Key changes from the proposed rule: 1) Increasing the maximum amount a transplant hospital may receive from CMS based on its performance score (upside risk payment) from $8,000 to $15,000 per Medicare kidney transplant.
CMS finalized plans to begin the Increasing Organ Transplant Access (IOTA) Model on July 1, 2025 www.cms.gov/newsroom/pre...

CMS nominee Dr. Oz is a strong supporter of Medicare Advantage. And there was good reason to be optimistic. MA companies promised they could improve care, provide extra benefits, & create more patient choice all while reducing costs. Sounds great. But that's not what happened. 1/x
Wow 1,000 followers! I'm looking forward to this new community for health policy researchers.
The migration of MedTwitter, along with a large cohort of science journalists, to BlueSky is striking in its scale and rapidity. In a short time, this shift has effectively transformed BlueSky into the essential hub for breaking medical news and vibrant scientific discourse.
The 2024 USRDS report is out (a few weeks ago actually)

It’s a treasure trove of data for nephrology nerds, aka all of #NephSky
So, short 🧶 on ESRD incidence/prevalence
Happy 11/15 day!! Here are some great 1115 facts 🧵
