Good point! The 18z soundings obviously don't make it into the 12z model runs that serve as the basis for the morning and midday forecasts, but at least they were in the 18z model suite presumably! Is this still a staffing issue that's driving the change from fewer 12z to more 18z launches?

For comparison, here is the map from essentially two years ago:

I don't know how much the missing data from this morning affected the 4cast, but seems feasible to think impact was/is at best trivial & more likely nontrivially negative. At short time scales, forecast can be seen as an initial value problem, where the "now" drives the "later" (forecast) 2/2

The upper level low/trough driving severe weather in the central US today is being poorly sampled by the (weather balloon) sounding network. We get lots of data from satellites & airplanes, but radiosonde data serve an important observational role, and errors in analysis reduce forecast accuracy.1/2

A circulation passed very close to the terminal at Will Rogers Airport in OKC a few minutes ago. No TDS, but probably a slightly hair-raising experience.

Half of staff at Boulder's NOAA Global Monitoring Lab face furloughs as funding freeze drags on Most staff at Boulder's NOAA Global Monitoring Lab are funded through federal grants that have not been released.

“Funding officially ran out for CIRES Global Monitoring Lab employees on March 24. The university informed 42 employees this week that they would be furloughed without pay on May 15 unless federal funding comes through”

Awesome view of @NASAArtemis II, as viewed from NOAA weather satellite. Note the dark (warmer) dot launching off from Cape Canaveral and off to the northeast! #flwx #artemis

If you were a Real Scientist (TM), you'd know to use real temperature, which is 254.8 K here. Don't lose until you squeeze out a real sub-zero (K) temp. </s>

I have fond memories stopping into my parents' bedroom before I went to bed - they watched this show almost every night after the local 10 pm news. At any rate, I wonder how the aesthetic of today's 30 yr olds will perceived by today's kids when they grow up.

It's not as anomalous as many other locales in the west have seen in past few days but still disconcerting to see the first 100.0 degree reading in my backyard in central Oklahoma considering it's only March 21st. At least the dewpoint isn't high, though that's increasing fire danger, so... #okwx

The multiple 112° readings today are just 1° short of the national April record, which happened in Death Valley with 113° on April 24, 1946 and also on April 22, 2012. Note that those occurred in late April (h/t to weather historian Chris Burt).

Impromptu chase with my oldest this evening after middle child's extracurricular. Got a great view to the west towards dusk from the Kickapoo TP (335) N of Harrah. Lots of outflow (persistent, huge area of outflow on radar and visually) save for a few minutes of a beefy bowl lowering.

Here's Guthrie @mesonet.org meteogram w/ similar pattern. Wind shift around 11 pm, temp and dew point dropped about 20 minutes later (Td plummeted into the 30s), and not long after Td rose a bit while temp took another leg down. Similar trend at Yukon. That's just my interpretation though!

The leading fine line is a wind shift. A 2nd, diffuse fine line is associated w/ drop in dewpoint and modest drop in T. IMO 3rd fine line behind the precip is main front associated with stronger winds and much cooler air. From my back yard - 1st passes around 11:50 pm, second around 12:20 am.
