We are happy to share that Judith has received residency! After years of fighting for safety, she is finally free to plan a future. “I feel calm, I feel relieved,” Judith shared about no longer having the weight of her legal case on her shoulders. “I feel safer [in the U.S.]”

In 2019, Judith called us, and we immediately got to work.

“[The Florence Project] always treated me well, always explained the process to me very well, every step,” shared Judith.

After months in a children’s detention facility, Judith was reunified with a cousin in Arizona. At the time of her release, she was provided with a list of organizations that could help her with her legal case, including our team.

“Being locked up, seeing the same people every day affects you,” she recalls. “Being a minor, without a lot of life experience and having your family far away, really affects you a lot.”

At the border, Judith was detained by border officials and sent to a holding cell known as a “hielera” because of its freezing cold temperatures. She slept on the floor, with just a plastic blanket, among adults too. Then, she was transported to a government-run shelter for immigrant children.

People remain detained for longer periods of time, with almost no avenues for release. The administration continues to try to remove people, even those who have won protection, to countries they have never been to before. And 2026 is on pace to be by far the deadliest year in ICE custody.

Congress has allocated billions toward immigration detention and enforcement operations. The administration has attacked legal education and empowerment programs for adults and seeks to end or severely scale back representation for unaccompanied children.

Right now, immigrants in Arizona, adults and children alike, are facing some of the most severe threats to their rights and safety that we have seen in our 35-year history. A dark blue graphic with a faint Statue of Liberty silhouette. Large headline reads “Birthright citizenship,” followed by text explaining it as a fundamental American promise that all children born on U.S. soil are equal members of the national community regardless of their parents’ background. Bold text states, “Now, the Trump admin wants to take this right away.” Additional text says this harms all Americans, including U.S. citizens. The Supreme Court will soon be deciding the fate of President Trump’s executive order on #birthrightcitizenship. For more than 150 years, the 14th Amendment has provided a simple rule: if you are born in the United States, you are a citizen. But now, that right is under attack.
