Replace [film] with any creative choice like lighting design, costume, cut, acting choice, dialogue, camera move, etc. and you’ll get to the heart of how I watch something.
Whether or not a story is worth telling is a question I’m desperately uninterested in engaging with.
I keep thinking about this and something I absolutely do not want to do is make broad judgments about how good or bad something is and suggest an objective “right” answer.
Everything always comes down to this question:
What is this [film] trying to communicate, and is it successfully doing so?
Honestly, this is encouraging! I love hearing about storytelling so much, especially in other mediums like comics, games, or photography. It’s so fascinating how much everything can overlap.
What interests me is storytelling. How is a film able to communicate what it’s trying to convey? What tools is it using, what techniques are being employed to elicit both broad and specific emotions? What makes a fight feel brutal, what makes a look between characters feel romantic?
Moving to a new platform has made me rethink the way I use it. Which, coupled with my career shift into editing, means I’d like to talk more about movies! And specifically my thinking behind why some creative choices work for me and others don’t.
