(no, I can't pronounce most places in the US...this post comes from a place of love I promise 😅💜)
This is brilliant, but also I am especially delighted to have my first @michaelhobbes.bsky.social mispronunciation to complain about...WHY-GAN?! As in Orwell's The Road to Why-Gan Pier? I know I'm supposed to hate Wigan as a Boltonian but it doesn't deserve this 😆
(And sorry that I'm not on social media very much - it tends to slip to the bottom of the list behind parenting, life and work! But I do appreciate being tagged, and I wish you luck with this 💜)
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to this! It's a good question, although it seems plausible several people might have come up with the idea of using it independently...
It's very much an academically priced book, but if you have a university library, do encourage them to preorder it as it's going to be so useful for teaching across history! www.bloomsbury.com/uk/cultural-...
Editing this one has been a looooong process but the finished product contains essays by an absolute dream team of scholars, and I can't wait to dive into the other volumes too.
Happy new year to all of you *and* to this gorgeous set of forthcoming books! I am beyond excited to finally share A Cultural History of Gender (and especially the volume I've edited, The Early Modern World) with you all.
Pleased to be interviewed for this much needed piece on the rising transphobia in higher education.

I am terrible at promoting my own stuff, but I was recently on a very cool podcast with absolute delights @krheyam.bsky.social and Ann of @vulgarhistory.bsky.social talking all things Anne Lister! It really does get rather vulgar...
Where are we at with trans+ migrants rights? 🏳️⚧️
In our latest Substack blog, we reflect on what the Supreme Court ruling means for trans+ migrants, unpack interim changes to how trans+ people in #detention are treated, and how the Government is erasing gender non-conforming people🗞️ buff.ly/eLRKMrA
Hello Bluesky, just to let you know I have a mailing list now! If you (like me) are trying to be on social media less, and would like to get infrequent emails with my book/event news, you can sign up at kitheyam.com/contact

💜 thank you Sam!
It begins with chipping off Art 3 (freedom from torture) and Art 8 (right to privacy and family life) for foreign criminals to assist deportation, then it will be extended to all asylum seekers, after that - who knows? It's the thin end of the wedge. Human rights should always belong to all humans.
The summer has seen anti-trans campaigns across the UK and US, alongside a crisis in healthcare. But what use could trans history have in these time, beyond proving 'we have always been here'?
Sam Rutherford @echomikeromeo reflects on Imagining Trans Futures:

Streeting says Government could look at legislation after Linehan arrest The Government wants to keep people safe by 'policing streets, not just policing tweets', Health Secretary Wes Streeting said. Helen Corbett Wednesday 03 September 2025 08:59 BST
Graham Linehan If a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act. Make a scene, call the cops and if all else fails, punch him in the balls. 8:02 AM Apr 20, 2025
The speed with which Labour came to the, at least implied, defence of Linehan, despite a track record of abuse and threats from him, exemplifies just how embedded the dehumanisation of trans and non-binary individuals has become as government policy. They really don't care who gets hurt.
We encourage our supporters to write to the BBC to complain about the use of a slur against trans women in this article www.bbc.com/news/article...
This is directly written in text and is not a quotation.
Ahh thank you! ☺️
Honoured to speak to Jake Hall for their fantastic piece here, about something that leaves me frightened and furious.
That's super helpful, thank you! 💜
Fellow freelancers, a boring tax question: do you use any accounting software, and would you recommend it? I currently, & happily, use an Excel spreadsheet - but I see this whole ~making tax digital!~ thing looming, so am reluctantly in the market for recommendations of more complicated things 🙏
This is so lovely Marty - thank you ☺️ it was wonderful to talk with you, I'm so in awe of everything you've done with Trans History Week!
It's✨publication day✨! You can order a copy, or get the open access ebook, at www.bloomsbury.com/uk/new-and-d.... And I've got 5 spare hardback copies to give away to anyone who runs a book-sharing scheme or would struggle to access the ebook - hmu if that's you 🏳️⚧️📚
Ahh thank you so much for reviewing! ☺️
Note also how France 24 refers to ‘trans people and their supporters’. In contrast to ‘trans activists’ when uk media reports. The uk has chewed on the shitty tablet of culture wars for far too long now
Thank you! ☺️ It'll be at www.bloomsburycollections.com/home, but not until the physical version is released I think
