Continuing our postcards from past Rising Stars series π
Today we hear from Ticha Sethapakdi, PhD candidate at MIT, sharing about her research, art, and experience in the Wigraph Rising Stars in Computer Graphics program π
> How did you find the transition between PhD and postdoc to be like? It felt like becoming a more independent researcher shaping my own research direction. Although the transition can feel uncertain at times, it is also an exciting period that offers more freedom to pursue ideas that genuinely interest you. As a postdoc, I also became more aware that younger students sometimes look to you for guidance, even informally. This gave me a stronger sense of responsibility to support the students around me and contribute to a positive research environment.
Iβve been extending my research interests from sketch processing to artistic styles more broadly. I am particularly interested in how modern image generation models represent and manipulate visual styles, and how these technologies may impact artists and creative workflows.β¨ This raises broader questions about authorship, attribution, and the relationship between generative models and artistic practice. Despite the uncertainty in this space, I find it exciting to engage with these questions and think about how computational tools can interact with creative communities.
Chenxi participated in the workshops a couple years before graduating, and since then she has developed her own research direction and honed her mentoring skills.

Chenxi Liu was part of the very first Rising Stars in computer graphics cohort in 2022. She is currently wrapping up a postdoc, and preparing to start a faculty position! Chenxiβs doctoral research bridges raw freehand line drawings with precise digital representations
> In what ways did the rising stars program support you? I really appreciated the sense of community that the Rising Stars program created. Itβs always nice to attend conferences and see familiar faces from the same cohort. Meeting people at a similar career stage also makes it easier to discuss professional challenges and decisions in a more open and supportive way. (A picture of the Rising Stars 2022 lunch)
π¬ Today we share updates from Chenxi Liu, who was part of the very first cohort in the Rising Stars in computer graphics program!
We are entering the last week of the application period, please consider applying if the program sounds like it could benefit you >> www.wigraph.org/events/2026-...
