This is so hard to imagine after working under Bob Mueller for 4 years. Shameful what they’ve done to that org.

Considering we don’t have a definition of consciousness, a mechanism for how it works, or even a full understanding of how AI works, this answer was a stunning display of over-precision in an area of deep, deep uncertainty. So why should we listen to this guy?

DEREK SHILLER: How AI will change what it is to live well Podcast Episode · Lives Well Lived · 16 April · 44min

I probably should have turned this off when Shiller said the final answer of his study about the probability that AIs are conscious is “8%”. Not 8 plus/minus anything. Just 8.

Federal judge unloads on ‘unserious’ RFK Jr., says anti-trans policy showed his ‘cruelty’ Judge Mustafa T. Kasubhai vacated the “Kennedy Declaration,” finding it unlawfully attempted to override medical standards and restrict care for transgender youth.

"Secretary Kennedy’s unlawful declaration harmed children,” the Judge wrote.

Who’d have thought a fossil-fuel shill like Trump would be the one to spark a green revolution? | George Monbiot The US attack on Iran has made the need for renewable energy inarguable, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

“Greens who were long dismissed as “idealistic” & “unrealistic” now look like hard-headed pragmatists & true patriots. They’re years ahead of their rivals in demanding a transition that makes sense on every level: environmental, economic & political” - great article from @georgemonbiot.bsky.social 👇

Opinion | My Wife Is 85. She Takes My Breath Away.

My wife of 24 years turned 50 last year. I can hardly wait to see her at 85. What a beautiful essay on living well.

I can see why you'd think that because Hawkins focuses on the neocortex (whereas I think consciousness starts lower down). Let's talk more when I finish the book and publish a review of it.

2 days ago 0 0 1 0

Yes, I can imagine that's a very confused term. Hawkins generally means: "The ability to make predictions about the future based on learned patterns." He spends the first third of this book looking at how the neocortex does this. The second 1/3 is then about AI. Final 1/3 is about humanity's future.

I somehow missed this back in 2023. Glad to see it now. I'm honored to have claimed the #1 spot on the MIT Press tongue-in-cheek "future banned book" list. mitpress.mit.edu/our-future-b...

This was such a great podcast, debunking metaphysically motivated bad science AND affirming a naturalist point of view as perfectly fulfilling and inspiring.

To put the stupid ideas of pronatalism and AI-doomerism together is really something. The idea that doing GATTACA can somehow combat our having done Terminator by mistake (oops!) in a battle of cautionary tales is just… weapons-grade hubris. Chef’s kiss…

‘I feel like I’m losing her’: the families torn apart by older relatives going far right It starts with a ‘back in my day’ nostalgic meme – then suddenly your elders are sharing AI-generated ‘boomerslop’ and repeating conspiracy theories …

This needs a lot of research.

“less is understood about the effects of a fragmenting political and media landscape on increasingly online boomers, the generation now aged from about 60 to 80.”

“half of all US adults were estranged from a close relative”

A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence (Audio Download): Jeff Hawkins, Richard Dawkins - introduction, Jamie Renell, Richard Dawkins, Basic Books: Amazon.co.uk: Books

Fascinating. I’m reading Jeff Hawkins’ book right now “A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence”. It has a forward by Richard Dawkins too. Have you read this? It’s very critical of the current AI paradigm. I’m planning to review it on my blog when I’m done.

WOW.

Our @younggreens.bsky.social now have 50,000 members - they are the biggest political youth movement in the UK.

And we're growing. Every single day I am meeting more young greens out on the streets campaigning.

This is how we make change happen.

Ooh I’m gonna listen to this for sure. A kind woman in my philosophy group (retired doctor) really liked McG and brought him up all the time. I didn’t have the strength to wade through him to see what, if anything, was worthwhile.

Technically you are right but the on/off is so dim and fuzzy to define that it is quite arbitrary to draw lines. Evolutionary thinking as an electrical circuit is still just a metaphor and it has limits of applicability.

I see consciousness emerging with life, btw, which has fuzzy beginnings too.
